Don't forget, Bengals player died before the Super Bowl and they played the game. Was that the right choice? Doesn't matter if it was on the field or not....the story concerning Hamlin is 'he is a person' and this is about 'being human'. If it matters now, it should've mattered then. Bengals are getting the shaft!

Don't believe for a second the Bills would have a chance against the Bengals in Cincy.....

Bengals fans need to get on the airwaves and phones and pressure the 'tough' Bills into changing the 2nd Rd game to Cincinnati! Don't wait until next week. Their choices cost the Bengals finances (which the league should have paid), they cost the Bengals a chance to showcase their skills and prove they are again Super Bowl worthy but do it at home for the most part.

This type of fallout only helps conspiracy people fan the flames. Prove your worth Bills! Come to the Queen City and see what happens! Show us the same love that we showed you!

How could you not mention Tim Krumrie's injury???

The Bengals spent an entire week on Damar. They did something before the game. Enough was enough. It was time to turn the attention back to the Bengals. BTW... is was about the NFL changing the rules. They literally had a rule in place for this situation and they scrapped it. I have no problem with what Mixon did. Time to turn the page.

The team's draft fails are common fodder. Most will remember Akili. the 1991 first round bust. But do you remember the poor guy picked #2? When I think about the Bengals' curses and weirdness, too many of them have been covered here, but I thought of this guy, Charles Fisher. DB rookie starter. First game. Ugh...

I remember Boomer making news laying down in front of a bus full of replacement players in order to stop them from crossing the picket line. I always respected him for standing up, er laying down for what he believed in.

Doc, you nailed it on the endzone "coin toss" celebration. While funny in its own way, it would have been much better had they paid the #3 tribute you suggested. Note to Mixon & Co. consult with Doc before your next big TD dance number. Still praying for #3 and all his family! But yes, GO BENGALS and keep that chip on your shoulder.

They spent all week paying tribute... it was time to make it about the Bengals.

Does anyone else believe the Stanley Wilson episode may have had a mob or other underworld connection? He had been doing very well and played a very important role in the games leading up to the Super Bowl. I'm sure there was a lot of gambling money involved in the SB and he represented an easy target. I'm confident they would have won if he played.

Bravo Doc! You are certainly tunes into what's on the minds of mainstream Queen City Dwellers!

How cool would it have been if Mixon and his teammates had lined themselves up in a number "3" formation? But at least we are not the Steelers, I guess . . . .

In today’s culture, whether sports or politics or business, more people feel free to impose their views on all regardless of how appropriate it is to the circumstances. Now, climate activists are gluing their bodies to famous works of art to protest fossil fuels. That will surely get everyone’s attention, right?

My solution would be to have the TV crowd refuse to show the end zone silliness as if they were the naked streakers back in the day. Won’t change a thing but at least you wouldn’t have the distraction in the middle of what you thought you were watching.

As for Sam and “not in Cleveland”, that was classic Sam. Can’t be topped, IMO. Hadn’t thought about the Bengals' string of unusual events like that, Doc, but you have me thinking now.

Was at Cleveland game, sitting right by Snowball end zone at the 5, 3rd row from field. Had to duck a few myself. It was crazy funny, considering DawgPounders used to throw frikkin batteries and beers at Bengals. Saw Sam grab mike across the way, looking really heated: warned my friends something weird was probably gonna happen. Bingo! Not showing the new celebration silliness is an excellent idea. No pub, whole thing dies out.

Respect your opinion doc but not nearly as worked up about the coin flip as you. Don't think it's a big deal.

Let compare Mixon’s coin flip to…oh…I don’t know…this random sack celebration yesterday from the Steelers.

Like I said yesterday, the coin flip didn't bug me. Young men who feel disrespected will do such silly things. Not an excuse, but a fact of life. They conducted themselves in light of the Hamlin situation with utmost class and grace. The Captains going over to be with their opponents on the field was a memory that I will not soon likely forget. So, the lesson here is that nobody is perfect.

The real dopey thing is defensive linemen running 60 yards to celebrate a turnover. Save that energy, men!

Burrow was due for a clunker. Better to get it out of the way now than next Sunday night. Time to tighten up the things that are a little loose and play loose.

Song of the day (where's yours, Doc!!??): Linda Ronstadt with harmonies by Don Henley with a Warren Zevon song:

That's a great cover of his by her, but nope! That's not it! :) He was gone away too soon, indeed.

Oh damn, i didn't know she did more than one cover of his songs.

Zevon delivered one of the greatest understated laments on Letterman when he revealed he was dying of cancer: "I might've made a slight tactical error in not going to a doctor for 20 years..."

That final Letterman appearance was so moving, yet heartbreaking. He was a tremendous talent for sure.

I'd add David Pollack's broken neck and subsequent retirement from the game as Bengals weirdness. Speaking of broken necks, there was Kenny Anderson's injury against the Steelers in '83. Oh, and finally in the weirdness category: David Shula. No specific incident, just the entirety of his tenure.

Expand full comment

That Kenny Anderson thing effectively ended his career. He was never the same after that. He was only in his early thirties, too. No penalty on the play, either.

Expand full comment

Also weird: Why isn't Anderson a hall of famer? The man's stats more than justify entry.

Expand full comment

Not just his stats, but he was the man whom Walsh used to perfect his offensive scheme. A pioneer.
