Call me a romantic, or maybe a degenerate gambler-but I love bowl season. A big part of it is that this is when the season crests on my season-long pick 'em pool. The key to picking football games isn't so much predicting the final score, but correctly assessing the overarching storyline that a game will follow. An OK power 5 school who had hoped to be playing on New Year's Day? Dunzo. A scrappy MAC team who flourished late and whose QB decided to play vs. prep for the draft? Lead pipe lock. Plenty of reasons to be cynical, but for me this plethora of games is a key facet of the holiday season. For lots of these guys, this is it.

I have paid for Direct Ticket for years and it is the only reason why I keep DV as my provider. Once football is gone, I'll figure out something else and plan to pay for the kids' college with the savings.

I like wasabi. A lot. I like it on sushi, especially, with a little soy. Yum!

I like horseradish, too. The two seem like they should be in the same species. I don't know for sure and I'm not lookin' it up. I will simply speculate.

The info you provided, though, was very helpful in furthering my understanding of the green goo. And the picture was great. Crisp. Delicious. I'm so inspired I'm right now driving to the store to buy me some sushi. Thank you for your inspiration.

WAHHHHH-SAHHHHH-BEE! I believe he's the brother of KIMO-SAHHHHH-BEE!

Again, pure speculation.

Think you nailed it on College Football Bowl Games - where most belong in the toilet bowl which we could all flush together. And... you nailed it without giving any free pub to the Wasabi sponsors. Go Bearcats - or whatever reasonable facsimilie of said team actually appears at Fenway. Thanks Doc.

Since I am not a true fan, I always liked that a few teams were rewarded by playing bowl games in warm places. Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl. Bound to have been more than three. This nonsense is nothing beyond “we do it because we can.” My nephew went to Florida twice with Louisville marching band. Mid aughts perhaps.

Cardinals finally won a basketball game last night. Joined it during first half. Solid game. WKU wasn’t expecting what they got.

I miss the NFL Ticket which used to be available in our retirement's fitness center. Cincinnati Bearcat and Bengal games are not televised down here in Gainesville, Ga as often as i wish they were, but at least i can watch the Falcons with DesRidder at QB, and subscribe to Amazon for TNF and ESPN+ for some of UC football and basketball games. I dont know how to get other Cincy games not televised in my area, Doc. Help a fella out!

Ugh. I was disappointed to hear you are watching pirated material. I thought you were one of the few remaining ethical guys out there.

C'mon, man. Save the morality kick. The real ethical scumbags are the corporate sports package guys, not Joe Little Guy/ Average Fan. If the corporate drones would stop with the rip-off prices and go back to being fair about it, pirating might drop to almost zero. Remember when Reds games were free on Channel5? UC Bball games on 19? Hey, if they wanna rip me off, I got no compunctions of beating them at their own game. Turn around is fair play. If you wanna pay out the nose for a couple games, have at it.

Sorry but I disagree. This is what capitalism is. You think something is priced too high? Don't buy it. But stealing isn't the answer. You are rationalizing intellectual property theft. Same thing we accuse the Chinese of doing.

Yeah, Robin Hood was such a villain, wasn't he? Burn those books!

Corporations, the red-headed illegitimate stepchildren of capitalism, are guilty of some of the most corrupt thievery in history. They buy up physical and intellectual property rights all the time, solely to become rich, charge exorbitant rates, and take such things away from more and more common Americans who can't afford the new inflated pricing that follow. Good corporate capitalists crave a world of nobles and surfs. They're, of course, the nobles, minus the nobility. That's why the Reds, X, UC games aren't locally televised and free any more. That's a better world? Hah! Sounds like you stand solidly behind corporate greed. Well, I suggest you check out your own morals before judging others. Seems they might need a little touch-up. I'm feeling a wee bit of hypocrisy, sir.

No hypocrisy here. I spent 23 years in the Air Force. I believe in integrity. Thievery comes in many forms. I doubt you'd walk into Kroger, Wal-Mart, or Macy's and help yourself to some stolen goods. You don't have to like corporations, but that doesn't give you the right to steal from. You are free to do all your shopping at small businesses. In fact, I'd encourage it. But you are simply rationalizing theft. If capitalism bothers you that much, perhaps you might want to find another country to live in. For the record, I am politically Independent and probably lean a bit left. I have no love for corporations or overpaid CEOs, but that doesn't give me the right to ever steal. And like it or not, pirating or viewing pirated material is theft. Sounds like you're the guy with the broken moral compass.

Wow, didn't take long to want me out of the US. Such tolerance. "Amerika-love it or leave it." Are you a big fan of Trumpian fascism? Deport the dissenters! It's all rigged! You cool with the swift executions in Iran? That's one way to get rid of dissenters against corporate America's greed machine.

Not sure how the Air Force ref fits the convo, but it comes across as you using it to wrap yourself up in the flag as proof you are a man of integrity. Sorry, no dice. Nice try. I know better. You left out an inconvenient fact: the US military has injected itself into more countries as an invader/policeforce than any other world power in the last 40 years. Oh, well, how cares, right? It's all just a job; civilians killed in those efforts are just collateral damage. Sure, believe that if you want. As for Walmart, Target, Kroger, Ford,et al, how can you keep up the front of "integrity" when shopping there, knowing so many of low cost, affordable, everyday goods are imported by huge US corporations from US owned 3rd world factories, where exploited workers are paid 5 cents on the dollar against US wages? Seems to me you embrace and condone thievery every time you shop there, sir. Enough with the holier than thou trip. Own it. It's a step on the necks of starving, underpaid workers to buy most imported goods in the US. You condone underpaid, non-living wages with every purchase. If playing the Air Force card gives you instant "integrity", I'm betting you think you can do whatever you please and feel covered. Yeah, right. Got it.

Choosing to obsess on someone like me maybe watching a couple basketball games a year that would and should still be free if greedy corporations hadn't bought the rights and decided to screw us, is both bizarre and senseless, considering your silence on the suffocating greed of corporations that is destroying our country and culture, as well as military malfeasance, but then I've noticed over the years that people who act morally superior to others usually suffer from terminal cases of smugness and out-of-touchness. The day you stop buying goods made and sold by exploited workers is the day you look serious to me about any right to claim the moral high ground. Until then maybe keep your judgments to yourself. You're just another schmuck who pretends to be blind to corporate theft and America's greed, complicit in its spread and harm to third world countries. Makes me pale by comparison, I'd say. But hey, enjoy that new washing machine, that new expresso unit. Run the flag up the flagpole all you want; polish your imaginary halo to death. It proves nothing. It's all about actions and consequences, not status, power and posturing.

I suppose it hasn't dawned on you that you are using either a computer or smartphone to send this garbage, both manufactured by "greedy" corporations. I suggest you put your money where your mouth is and purchase a piece of land in Montana and live off of it with no electricity or running water. Who's really the hypocrite here?

I agree with you on the bowl game mania, Doc. They might work as a Chamber of Commerce gimmick to draw attention to a city or area but most are completely irrelevant to anyone but their own diehard fans. I will watch the Fenway farce Saturday because of who is playing but it means little because of who won’t be there. Is the Keg of Nails on the line at least?

Let’s face it, money has destroyed the traditions of college football. I support giving the players money and freedom just like the coaches but it isn’t making the fan experience any better. I am beginning to wonder if they really need to be students anymore especially when I read about a player that is on his third or fourth school in a five-year period.

They might get a key replacement where one is needed badly but it doesn’t do anything for a school’s academic reputation, does it? I say let the ones who only want to pay football skip the charade and give the scholarship to a more deserving kid.

I saw a picture of Vince Lombardi and Sonny Jurgensen today from 1969 and those 1969 Redskins helmets with the lances coming around the sides were the best in team history. Unrelated, but a fact.

Other than the New Year's Six and the CFP, I have no interest in any of the bowls. I do miss the Carquest Bowl and the Blockbuster Bowl, because those names were ridiculous.

I think that might be the most humorous take on the college football bowl season I've ever read. Really enjoyed the detailed background of wasabi interspersed amongst the paragraphs of bowl inanity.

Speaking of wasabi, Cooper's Hawk in Kenwood makes a mighty fine wasabi mashed potatoes ... it is one of the best sides for an entrée I think I've ever had. In addition to some fine wine.

As you would say, "Ckitout."

The only sports package I've ever spent greenbacks on is DAZN, simply for boxing. It's also fun to watch how immersed the Brits get with their billiards and darts tourneys, and the crowds they pull for those events. But with DAZN and its annual fee, I've also been able to catch quite a few title fights -- especially at heavyweight and light heavyweight -- of which the PPV cost alone would have been as much as the annual fee. But when it comes to the NFL, MLB, etc.? I'll listen to it on radio before buying a package to watch games.
