Look into St.George in the Appalachicola region of Florida. Still quiet and beautiful but it too is being "discovered". Hard to find anywhere that isn't now. So many of us running away from it all🤫

Great analysis on St. Aug vs. PV. Been a decade since we moved from St. Aug and I still miss it (well, until I remember our insurance bills from our historic district house). PV was a good place to work but nothing beat living in SA. And yeah, that greens fee at Sawgrass just keeps creeping up ...

We lived just north of the mission, a few doors from the exit of the Fountain of Youth. The little tourist trolleys would go right by. So much fun for about three years, then we headed back to Indiana to raise the kids and be normal. Sigh.

I felt sorry for Richardson. He’d only had, what, 47 pitches at Triple A? WTF?!? I was listening in radio when Tommy Thrall called his first 2 pitches. It was like he really didn’t know what to say. After the first, the kids was fine though and the Reds shoulda, coulda, woulda won.

Elly is gonna be GREAT but let’s get him out of that lead off spot, for God’s sake! The kid is lost there.

Framer is a shell right now. Rest that poor guy!

Pitching regressing to its sad norm, rookies without any good data on them playing to a more average / less newsworthy type of season. The Strikeout to BB ratio is hard to believe if you haven't been watching the Reds most recent brand of baseball. Their BABIP - a stat they were Top-3 in most of the season, now sits at No.8, just .04 off league average.

If you listen closely, you'll notice the narrative changing from over on the other side. It was: "We're in first, we clearly know what we're doing and the plan is working," to "It's evident we were 2 years ahead and a rental wouldn't be enough to get this team over the hump anyways." Meanwhile, I maintain the same thing I have for months - it's a solid roster, it just needs help. Needed a bailout, but instead of Barack Obama they got Mitch McConnell.

And isn't this just entirely on brand anyways? Name the roster FO went to bat for at the trade deadline. Was is the surprise 2010 roster? No, it was a surprise, I can see that. What about 2011? The mighty 2012 team? What splash did we make in 2013, amidst the dying embers of Reds competitive flame? The 2019 offseason was cool and 2020 was fun, but again, when, if ever, has front office come in hot at the deadline?

I'd love to hear another GM's take on dealing with the Cincinnati Reds.

Thoughts on CJ Nitkowski on the All Prospects team? First rounder in 1994, supposed to the next ace. Traded in 1995 by Bowden to the Tigers for David Wells who helped make the run to the LCS. Nitkowski played ten years, won 18 games, and had a 5.37 career ERA. No big sacrifice for the last time the Reds advanced in the post-season.

Looks like the '17 Tigers read the 2014-15 Reds' playbook on how to dismantle a team and receive nothing in return.

One 12 game winning streak and 2-6 game losing streaks. A push. Unless it continues. Please don't continue! Still in it, however, because...parity. Who knows? Regardless, still thinking playoffs this deep in the season beats the early season mojo.

Drove from North Port across Florida to St. Augustine several months ago, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Definitely will return.

Hopefully the WhoDeys play more like the Marx brothers than the Hansen brothers. Just stay healthy!!

I believe they've lost 6 straight a total of three times this year. They've certainly been streaky.

Deep sigh on the current Reds troubles. Do they miss the leadership of Jonathan India that much? That thought has crossed my mind. I mean, the pitching is...not stellar, but we knew that would a challenge moving forward. It's all the errors, the lack of focus, the limited energy that has me wondering. Or maybe the kids are just tired...Whatever it is, they need to snap out of it and play ball.

As excited as I am for the upcoming Bengals season, I loathe preseason football. Wake me in September...

On the vacation front...I have never been to St. A but have always wanted to go. Our absolute favorite place on the SE coast is Saint Simons Island, GA, which isn't too far from SA. On the next trip to SSI we may have to at least plan a day trip there.

Side note - I, too, am completely over the every-tourist-town-in-America vibes in any place. And, I don't like to shop on vacation (I honestly am not a big shopper, period). Explore, eat & sit in equal parts is absolutely my ideal vacation.

I’m trying to give the Reds some breathing room. Hard to come down off the high of the big streak. Injuries, long season, whatever. Mostly checking my phone app for a while, but swept by Washington hard to understand.

My girlfriend who was a professional theater director and diehard Stillers fan, loved preseason games. Said they were auditions. For me they are best done out of the public eye.

Stop cheerleading for your favorite vacation spots, Doc. You only make the crowding worse. Happy Monday! Making some refrigerator dill pickles this afternoon. If it’s not storming on my brother he may come hang out. He has new vinyl Steve Miller Band that predates Sailor. We will give it a listen. Stereo and speakers are in dining room in proximity to pickle productions.

My take, Richardson appeared to be on an OD of 5-Hour Energy Super Strength. He had trouble catching the ball from the catcher while he was dancing and swinging his glove around...very unnerving. I hardly saw him settle in for a pitch. Yikes!! The Reds are currently on the back burner. Hoping football doesn't let us down.

As for the Beach Boys, you can't miss with them in my book.

Anderson Ramirez was better than Paul Diaz.

I'd never seen an ump back up like that and let it happen. That stuff happens in hockey. Maybe it was allowed because they're little guys?

Even if the Reds had went out and got a starting pitcher at the deadline or someone else in the bullpen, I'm not sure it would be enough. They have a starting lineup almost full of rookies. Nobody is really in their prime yet. Stephenson isn't helping at the plate and we all know Votto is at the end of his career. Certainly a lot of what ifs with this team going forward.

BTW, I'm not sure I can ever remember a broadcaster sounding as down as Sadak. Even in the years when the Reds were playing bad. George Grande always had a positive attitude.

Expand full comment

Votto tied for fourth on the team with 12 HR's...in only 38 games. I know his average and obp are down, but lately he seems to be one of the few guys scoring.

I'm glad Sadak is toning it down right now. The only thing that might be worse than watching them play this poorly would be also having to hear his stupid voice strain thing he does when he gets excited.

Expand full comment

I'm glad for Votto. My comment was in no way being critical of him. Just saying, he's reaching the finish line whenever that comes. But they need some veterans like him in the lineup. I would love for them to reach the playoffs and Joey play a major part.

Sadak can be over the top. So I get what you're saying. They are losing and if he's sounding like a cheerleader, it's not as believable. Just his energy level was pretty evident yesterday.

Ramirez landed a lucky, but effective punch. A fight like that would have livened up Saturday’s Reds v. Nationals game my wife and I attended with good friends.

The Reds were listless and just seemed to be going through the motions. Andrew Abbot’s arm may be overworked for this season. A rough day, the 2nd consecutive bad start for our team Ace. 4 fielding errors, wow. That took the wind out of the fans for a bit. The Nats’ unknown starter had a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings. I think the crowd would have eventually pulled for him if he had kept it up a couple more innings, but TJ Friedl awakened our hopes with a 3 run homer. I’d like to hear others’ thoughts on this very sad slump the Reds have jumped head first into.

Your commentary of the NFL preseason BS is spot on. I wish more sportswriters had your courage and spoke out against it. The NFL kingpins must think it is amusing, watching those willing to throw their good hard earned

$$ at them.

Pure luck. Tim Anderson is an arrogant mofo, glad he got a little chin music.

Good one. Karma has a way of taking down those types. He’ll have to live with the videos of his KO’d self for the rest of his life, as has Robin Ventura when he attacked Nolan Ryan 30 years ago.

Good one. Maybe the all knowing lords of Karma had had enough of Anderson and wanted to teach him a lesson in humility. Now the video of his KO’d self will be replayed untold many times this season and in the years to come, like the Nolan Ryan/Robin Ventura event.

C'mon, man. Mets were sellers. If you'd rather have Sims over Sewald in the 8th or 9th, you'd be alone in that choice. Angels are beyond knowing. Reds were in 1st place at the deadline, had an obvious need and an obvious surplus. Part of the reason teams covet good farm systems is their flexibility when it comes to making deadline deals

We don’t know asking prices. No one made a big splash with pitching. Not really a lot out there. I’m more concerned with their hitting. Reds starters have been in top 5 in lowest era. They were #2 until recently. This team strikes out too much. Green and Gutierrez coming back this month. Lodolo to follow. If season ended today, they are in the playoffs.

"Are you trying to say JC can't hit a curveball?" is one of my all-time favorite movie lines. Best basebll movie ever, for my money.

Unless you know what pitchers the Reds were offered, and for whom, I don't think you can take a victory lap over their current swoon. It's clear that the team needs pitching help - has been all year. But this slide owes as much to fatigue as anything else. Stuart Fairchild - fresh from Louisville - is the only guy aside from Freidl who had consistently competent ABs in the two games I saw. So while I agree that they should have done something to secure at least a couple of bullpen arms, I ascribe their uninspired play to Dog Day burnout.

Expand full comment

As a team they seem to be swinging at a lot more bad pitches lately. To my untrained eye it just looks like they're pressing. I think another lineup shakeup is due. Move EDC down and let Friedl leadoff for a while. Hell, I'd be willing to try Benson at leadoff occasionally. Whatever it takes to get some guys on base earlier in the game. Then they can play their aggressive style of ball and terrorize opposing pitching.

Agree completely with flip-flopping DLC and Freidl. I'd say it's inevitable.

Doesnt every other team have the same fatigue? Have the Reds played 20 more times than anyone else? I think Bull Durham is easily the best ball movie.

Expand full comment

I think the fatigue is as much mental as physical, which I don't think applies in AAA.

I'd love to know exactly what the Reds were offered. If they were offered anyone of any value for one of the forty-five shortstops they have in their system, and didn't take it, they deserve strong criticism. Can we assume that they were? I honestly don't know.

I loved Bull Durham. It was a more polished movie than Major League. But I liked the satirical aspect of ML and I think it had more funny characters. As a movie - I'd pick BD. But as a Comedy, I'm sticking with ML.
