NEXT YEAR ON MARCH MADNESS THURSDAY ALL THE TML REGULARS SHOULD MEET AT A LARGE ENOUGH VENUE TO WATCH SOME BBALL DRINK SOME SUDS SMOKE SOME CIGARS AND MEET EACH OTHER IN PERSON. I HEARD THAT DOC MIGHT BE WILLING TO PICK UP THE TAB.
What's your definition of good shooting in basketball? What stat/s tell/s you how good some shooter shot? I use a rule of thumb guage of at least making as many as you miss, for what a shooter should shoot for to be considered good. So 6/1o 6o% 2pt shooting 12 points on 1o shots is good. But since made 3pt shots are 15o% the value of the 2pt make, 4/1o 4o% 3s = the same 12pts from those 1o shots and the 4o% 3baller is an equally good scoring efficiency shooter as the 6o% inside the arc ace. This also makes your 5o% breakeven 1/2 make/miss ratio for 2s = a 1 for 3 33.3% the breakeven pts/shot for 3s. Obviously these % values are mathematically incompatible, so why do sportscasters and so-called analysts even speak them out loud in a combined apples + oranges % confusion, especially if understanding what's really happening on the court is their mission?
2+3 shooting shouldn't even be something talked about when the relationship of 2s vs 3s taken/allowed is much more defining of the teams on the floor. And comparing the relative shooting/defending skills 2s vs 3s gives a lot of insight into any particular team or game they played. When you watch games breaking this into 2 separate theaters, it renders a much more coherent picture of strategic decisions and approach. There's also some quirks in the comparative numbers in that 1o/3o 3s generates 5 more rebound opportunities than the same scoring 15/3o 2s. And since more fouls are committed on 2s than 3s which also tends to be the smaller number taken comparatively, the fact of fouled in the act of shooting only counts as an attempt if the shot is made skews 2% shooting in a + direction. This would seem to relatively overinflate the 2pt% by virtue of only the made baskets affecting the base denominator of drawing contact taking it to the hole, particularly among the bigs
This leads me to another tool for fine enjoyment and appreciation of this spectacle of madness, the 4 Factors approach to bb analysis which assigns % weight to important segments of the game, namely
4o% shooting
25% turnovers
2o% rebounding
15% free throwing
Of course there's an us/them POV aspect for each = actually 8 factors, but who's counting? And with 4o + 15% importance, clearly the point of putting the ball in the hole is over half of the game
The Fam had Orlando Brown Jr. in their pocket the entire time. No one saw that coming. Do they cut Collins and Mixon and go after Zeke Elliot at RB? I would have said no this morning but now? Hmmm…
Elliot is burned and LC likely starts on PUP and/or IR which makes his base into an injury split I believe and $2.4m of his '23 salary is in per game roster bonus already
Back in Cronkite's day, it was the anchor's job to convey ALL the national news in twenty some minutes. Not much time for bias. The advent of news magazines like 60 Minutes and Nightline allowed producers more space and time to choose their topics and make commentary. The nation's appetite for news programs eventually led to the 24 hour news cycle and the bias we live with today. The bias is regrettable and at times stomach turning, but for better or worse, we are far more informed than our parents and grandparents ever were. We just have to go to more places for our news and sift the bias from the facts. Finding truth is time consuming.
TML suggestion for next year's Madness: Since Doc and many of us OG's no longer have an office pool in which to participate, perhaps Doc or a surrogate could set up a TML bracket. Could be fun for the Mobsters.
Going to miss Von Bell and the enthusiasm of Perine and Hurst. Mixon's numbers were down but I think that was more a function of the offense design than Mixon's effort. That said, I'm guessing the Men can get better value than Mixon in the RB position. Not about to spend the time required to dive into the free agent pool, so I'll sit here poolside and trust that the front office has things under control.
I start my day with the Jumble ( digital Lexington Herald since paper not available) and comics. Usually with second cup of coffee.
I support several newspapers, but get two paper copies of The State Journal every week. Supposed to be in mailbox on Wednesday and Saturday. Always behind. I blame the Versailles post office. Sunday NYT arrives around Wednesday. I like the book review and arts/style sections. Pass the bulk on to cousin for use in shipping her Etsy sales. Magazine gets recycled.
I’ve grown selective. There are young print journalists who are reporting KY legislative session on Instagram. Cleverly and succinctly.
That whole album is great, particularly GT's crooning of 'Good Thing' and crank it worthy yodeling on 'Who Do You Love?' ... and whereabouts are you that the Woofer PO treats you so unkindly?
Drat...Perine. Oh well, just have to wait and see who is taking their place. I think the TEAM will have something to say...this will be a group decision to add to the "family".
When I took my travels in the past, I never watched news, only weather concerned me. But, those were different times, for sure. It's a great way to cleanse the brain. Enjoy where you are, not the things we don't seem to have any control over. These are the news days of throwing a brick at the TV on occasion, or going to bed with a high blood pressure, and awakening at 3:00 a.m. still exhausted and angry at what isn't being done. I'll feel better when law becomes "Law" again. The statue of liberty is disgraced representing "Liberty and Justice for All." When?
I watch too much TV but very little news anymore. I get the news on my phone. My TV time is mainly drama series on Netflix, Hulu, etc. Mostly only watch sports on regular TV.
Your "no news is good news" experiment will leave you with mixed feelings. I have done it for years as I became more and more disenchanted with what was considered "News". I tend to get international news from the BBC (probably because their accents make me feel like they are smarter). I no longer trust anything I'm not witnessing first hand (is that redundant?)....and I'm starting to care less and less anyhoo... considering applying for a retirement visa that allows me to live out my days working in/on a peat bog in exchange for free whiskey and barely intelligible accents ... woof
Selective scanning of multiple sources works well enough, if you likewise cross vet for bias and accuracy. I can account and adjust for POV just fine, it's the factual reliability over time that more determines the worthiness of any particular source. When this assclown is the iconic avatar of the frightwing echo chamber, you know you've got a big problem that simply does not mirror from the left
I'm actually spending the next two days in my decompression zone by taking a train to Flagstaff with a train change in Chicago. It is a great way to see the country without any distractions. I started to take at least one per year when I worked in corporate America. I allowed me to get to my destination relaxed and ready to enjoy the vacation. I always enjoy a deep dish pizza (Beggars Pizza) between trains in Chicago and might get to see the green river while in Chicago. There is no wifi on the Western trains. The only problem now is that Amtrak needs a CEO who cares about the Western trains to restore the train travel to what it was prior to Covid. I's still a more relaxing alternative to flying or driving.
I typically only watch local news and sometimes watch Fox or Network. Fox's true reporters (Brett Baier, Bill Hemmer, and Martha McCallum) are pretty objective, but I don't like Tucker or Hannity opinion shows. I previously watch network national news but had to stop when every newscast started with 15 minutes of stories about Trump or Covid. I miss the old 30 minute true Headline News reports (HNN, previously CNN)
I am very disappointed that the Bengals were unable to sign Perine, Hurst, and Bell. They appeared to be affordable and worth the price. It will be virtually impossible to replace both safeties, 3 tight ends and 3 running backs.
I’m afraid it’s neither the information media itself nor the respective delivery methods thereof that are causing the bodily response you wish to rid yourself of. There is something else. And I’m even less sure that a seven day respite will provide the buffering agent you (we all) need. Ignorance has been demonstrated not to portend bliss.

When local news tried to go Hollywood, I gave up. Open sets, newscasters sometimes standing up, sitting on bar stools with one leg on the floor, walking around, people in all parts of the room, over here, over there, fake cheeriness everywhere: it got to be more broadway than news. And then there's the painfully cheerful banter during transitions, the hopelessly bad segues. Just gimme the damn news!!! Geesh! Where's crusty old Al Schottelkotte when you need him?
Perrine, Bell, and Hurst were all reliable, extra effort guys. They were very good, team-oriented guys.. They were smart, experienced, and made few mistakes. So, of course the Bengals lose them. Every successful team needs guys like them in support roles to win championships. The Bengals have regressed to being the leaky bucket again, holes everywhere. They simply have no idea how to build or sustain success. Of coure, what's new about that?
One of the first things I ever sold on Ebay was a pair of brand new Hoka Hoka One running shoes. They were Rapa Nuis. Had no idea where it was or what it was, just thought it was a cool name. After today, I think I might have to go there to celebrate my capitalistic success. Relax, people. I'll send postcards. It'll be like you're almost there.
Not trying to be contrary, but the Bengals are sitting in the cat bird's seat both personnel and cap-wise as far as the NFL final 4 + Buffalo are situated comparatively and reshaping/reloading for '23, the way it looks to me. I'd put them in the similar situation as the Bengals' middle '7os teams that were ostensibly #2 level in the league while being buried in their own division behind the legendary '7os stillers. KC is top dog for now, but ...
Here's also a sortable cap tracker to play around with showing Der Bings #1 in least '23 dead $$$ w/o having made even their first cap space-creating cut as of yet ... KC also cut DT Clark and lost S Thornhill to the Browns, plus OBJ they didn't tag at LT so he wasn't part of their cap picture already
While we're at it ... has anyone felt the extreme waste of time / braincells watching LOCAL news. OMG, it's my own fault for being hooked in by days of yore (Al Schottelkotte, Denny Jansen, etc). But now, the 30 minutes is half commercials, the other half WEATHER! An iota of news, if it's worthy.
It's awful, and I feel like Fox19 is the worst. Nothing personal against the anchors that work there, but it just seems so amateurish and intended for teenagers or something. I can't quite put my finger on what's different there, but any time i turn it on (typically if i want news at 10pm when nobody else is on) I feel like i'm losing intelligence haha. I think i like 5 (WLWT) the best out of all of them.
"Losing intelligence" ... exactly, it's the IQ-sapping properties of the amygdala hijack mechanism and it's intentional. Especially anything to do with Rupert Murdoch & friends
I will take your no news challenge. I read the NYT and Washington Post daily and look at the Enquirer for local sports stuff. No news for a week. I'm in. Like you said maybe I'll come out the other side a little dumber (a low bar already) and happier. It's an interesting idea. Hal McCoy was/is the absolute best Reds beat / sports writer. I still watch the Reds games on TV. I will continue to do so if... No George Grande. Mrs. Thinwallet would not let me watch if he was doing the broadcast. She got tired of me yelling at the TV. Nickname for everyone.
You had hinted that you were going to announce future plans for TML. Is there an announcement forthcoming? Reason for asking is I have found some blogs on Substack that I am interested in subscribing to. Kareem Abdul Jabbar's being one. I want to keep my media purchases low but have to keep the TML in my budget. Us Mobsters have a right to know..
Problem with the media is commodification, which has always been an issue, but seems to be more prevalent than in the past.
My dad worked at WKRC (radio and TV), WCKY and WLW, KTAR in Phoenix and WIBA in Madison. He still occasionally anchors the morning drive at KTAR when the main folks are out. He always said he had a face for radio. I, foolishly, decided to pursue a degree in print journalism in the early 2000s. I used to say I had a voice for newspapers (Appalachian Mickey Mouse on downers, if anyone is wondering...). I learned a lot and got an English (!?) degree out of it.
Problem is, what I learned was no longer applicable to the modern era, especially in the early to mid 2000s before the prevalence of Twitter and other social media. I learned how to cover a beat, which unfortunately has no relevance in today's world. I work in government (criminal justice) and write/edit court reports so at least the English degree is somewhat useful.
The beat is how you get info. What was it Yogi Berra said about learning a lot by watching? 99% thankless work for some tidbits that might eventually pan out, but it takes time, energy and determination for which most media outlets have no patience. God help you if you find something that might upset someone in power, especially if it impacts your employer's bottom line.
I'm 39. I'm glorifying the past way more than I should, and I know better. There's people out there fighting the good fights who will probably never be recognized nor appreciated for their efforts. At a base level, holding the powerful accountable was a core tenet of journalism, or at least that's what I keep telling myself.
Ever looked into something like the KY Center for Investigative Journalism? My buddy/somewhat college mentor worked for them and a similar startup in Ohio
I went to grad school in Northern Arizona for criminology but the English degree helped tremendously come term paper and thesis time, as well as with working an innocence project case back when the school had an innocence project (now a part of Arizona State).
Favorite interaction with a professor my first semester of grad school:
My Mom always said she'd have become a HS English teacher if the 4 of us hadn't been in HS (she didn't want us in her classes) while she got an elem ed degree instead. I tested into adv ENG 1o5 and when Prof Durant complimented my first effort and asked me where I learned to write, I told him from comic books
Yes! The Azores! Went there on vacation a few years ago and can't wait to go back. They speak Portuguese, which sounds like a mix of German and Spanish, and while few people on these islands speak English, we had very little trouble communicating. Not touristy and the people are awesome.
I wish I could give up news for a week but I have a volunteer gig reading the newspaper for the blind. I will try it for a few days however and give you a full report.
I hear you about the Azores. I sometimes dream about living as an ex-pat somewhere where no one has ever heard of Tucker Carlson. The biggest deterrent is the language barrier. I'm just not sure at my age that I want to learn a new one, and even if I did, it would be very rudimentary. I would never be able to pick up nuance. With the internet, I could still get my American sports. I'm just tired of all the nonsense. We are getting whipped up about nothing by millionaires on TV making tons of money with the sole purpose of sensationalized and shocking audiences addicted to bullshit. PT Barnum had it right.
Tucker “Turd Tongue” Carlson is the poster boy for The Crap News movement that seems to have taken over our nation. What disturbs me is that FN is the #1 watched cable channel in the US. So lots of people listen and apparently believe this s**t, UGHH! America has developed a taste for an excrement dominated news diet. It must be time to pray for Divine Intervention.
Kate Cassidy I have seen that bit of data at multiple, non Fox (some are anti-Fox) sources. I believe nothing anyone says on Fox. It is played on the TVs of the gym I frequent. I have periodically tried listening, in the spirit of fairness while fighting my repulsion of them. After 2 minutes, they have racked up a few lies. By 5 minutes I am fighting the urge to puke on the exercise equipment, so I either change channels or go back to listening to music.
Have your tried to complain about the equipment being set on Fox? I would for sure. I've tried also and all I see is The Pillow guy and Tucker Carlson who repulses me.
Kate, I live in Miami Township, Clermont Co. It is Trump/Fox country. 67% Trump supporters. The owner of the gym is one of those guys. Good man, but he’s hooked on their Kool-Aid
You guys are obviously extreme high empaths. I also get the same visceral projectile vomitus rumblings from single digit minutes samplings of the smirking jackass network
Kremlin hybrid warfare IRA trollbottery targeting and amplifying the frightwing echo chamber and social media feeds & feeding is what's trying to take over
I don't believe I've watched an actual news show in a few years, be it cable, local, etc., with the exception of catching local weather when there's a severe thunderstorm/tornado warning going about. I'll read news online or via Twitter, if it's something that catches my eye, just to see if we're at war yet, or another plague has arisen, or my bank is going belly up, but it is very minimal in scope.
Heck, my Facebook feed is mostly full of pro wrestling pages that have been recommended because I read an article via Facebook on Macho Man Randy Savage. I'll take that over sensationalized doom and gloom from the news outlets any day. I know there are still honorable journalists out there still doing great work, and adhering to the SPJ ethics, but unfortunately, in this day and age, most news is simply to get the clicks, page views and advertising ... the best way to do that, of course, is by blowing the news out of proportion and evoking emotional reactions, good or bad, from the audience. I wish you the best on your news "fasting," Paul. You will see a difference.
Some Bengals fans are in meltdown mode on Twitter today, after the loss of Hurst to Carolina this morning. After the past few years of great success, it appears the Bungles PTSD is seeping its way back into a portion of the fandom. I'll give The Men the benefit of the doubt, at least until the completion of the 2023-24 season.
Great tune by Thorogood. One of my favorite '70s artists, and a great one to choose when singing karaoke. I've brought the house down doing "Move It On Over" a few times, back in my Army days. This one now might be added to the karaoke repertoire.

They and agencies like them do great work.
I went to grad school in Northern Arizona for criminology but the English degree helped tremendously come term paper and thesis time, as well as with working an innocence project case back when the school had an innocence project (now a part of Arizona State).
Favorite interaction with a professor my first semester of grad school:
Professor: Where did you learn how to write!?
Me: Is it that bad?
Professor: No, its succinct!
Just wait until you hit 60!
I'm already struggling with the thought of turning 40 later this year...
Meh ... 6o is the new 4o
Yes!
Fox News claims they are the "the #1 most watched cable TV station." Having being said, do you believe them?
Kate, there are 8 other channels to watch. I’ve checked out Gox twice in the last 6 months, so it’s a small matter.
Kremlin hybrid warfare IRA trollbottery targeting and amplifying the frightwing echo chamber and social media feeds & feeding is what's trying to take over
You should try some HL Mencken
Hurst did exactly what he and Der Bings set out to do here, a successful one year prove it rental with the home team scoring potential comp picks piling up from HH's contract year effort. Kudos to both
