Jerry Springer sat a few rows behind me at a Reds game several years ago...with one very young blond on his arm. I thought, maybe it's his daughter...but now I think not.
I'm really excited about the Bengal's picks. Just when I thought, probably everyone worth anything was already picked, they pulled a new prize out of the hat. Amazing! Looking forward to a great season with some new exciting players! But I do remember the great TJ Hoos was a late draft pick (7th round as I recall) and turned out to be the best one...underused and underrated. He was rarely put in the game when he should have been. His favorite line when things were going so poorly for the team was, "I'd be happy to do something different if someone would tell me what they want me to do." He was totally open to expressing himself about the poor leadership of the Coaching staff at the time. What a waste of great talent.
So, we're talking NFL Draft again huh... not me. RIP Jerry Springer. Worked as an election night stringer for him one November while he was anchoring ACTION 5 News. Got the Clermont County BOE assignment - what fun! Jerry proved to be friendly. Again, RIP Jerry.
Those of a certain age will remember the old Bar on the Barge - Coconut Joe's in Covington. They hosted a huge crowd every Monday night, where The Menus regaled us with the same repertoire week-in, week-out. Jerry would come over after the 11 o'clock news and do a set with them, singing the same Beatles tunes. He couldn't sing, but man could he get the crowd going! He was also smooth with the ladies, wink wink. Stark contrast to when I saw him a few years earlier with his kid on the concourse of Riverfront Stadium, looking like a middle-aged dad going to a Reds game - pasty white legs with too-tall tube socks, carrying a bag of peanuts. RIP, Jerry. You were a true original!
Yes, Doc, you guessed it. Jerry S. is headed to my house. I told him it's BYOB&B. Bring your own booze and blondes. Cigars are on the house. Dysfunctional people in idiotic arguments will cost extra. Bring some cigars, Doc, and the doorman at my palatial estate will wave you in ahead of the crowds forming out front as I type this. I see mostly blondes in the lines.
Adios to a nice guy who was sharp at sharing his wit and following his instincts. He showed us what can happen when you be a good listener with a quick comeback that hits home. I consider him one of Cincy's best products of the last 50 years. He was actually a very good newsman, too. So long, Jerry. You brought us more than you took.
Jerry was born in a London bomb shelter during the period the nazis were bombing. His grandparents had been victims of the Holocaust. Age 4 was when his family came across the pond so he could grow up in Queens
I remember the Jerry the boy mayor. He became a good news anchor. Liked his bits on WEBN too. His life took a strange twist. I’ll remember the good times, Jerry Springer. You had your share. Thanks for the commentary and humanity.
Saw Jerry in 1978 at Miami University. He was running for some office (senator, governor, etc). All I remember is he advocated having income taxes support schools instead of property taxes. And that he hung around after his speech to talk to a few college kids who knew nothing about nothing. I was impressed. RIP Jerry.
Ironically, this week is the week I've finally had enough of David Bell. I feel like they won the last two games in spite of him. He took Friedl out of the lineup late two nights ago because a LH pitcher was on the mound. Even though Friedl had a game winning hit against a lefty the night before. And then yesterday leaving Gibaut in to start the ninth. He insisists on playing ONLY by the numbers and as I've said many times before, that's worthless (imo) as a manager. A good baseball manager is someone who has at least SOME feel for the game and his players. David Bell doesn't seem to have that in my opinion.
I agree with Doc that it would be an injustice to let DB go before providing him with a legitimate team. But there are times when his unwillingness to gamble - and his disdain for the running game - test my nerves. Why play it so safe with a team that relies on emotion to compensate for the absence of talent?
Agreed re the running. It's not a fast team as a whole, but that shouldn't mean it can't be aggressive, especially when Homerball isn't happening so far.
If you can't succeed at least 8o% with the new rules (better is 85% which is currently top 1o in MLB) I believe you should rethink your approach... toward giving up running much for advantage at all
And only 9 teams are even attempting more than 1 SB per game so far. I don't quite understand where all this extra scoring is supposed to be coming from ...?
Taking down Friedl prompted Bochy to bring on a RHP ( for 3 batters min) which then DB pinch hit another LHB who delivered a 2 run double and subsequently India and a Reds' lead and then victory ..
Yeah, i'm still not entirely convinced that was Bell's plan all along, but it did work out. Still don't like taking that chance from Friedl. Ride the hot hand (or bat)!
Check out the rabid comments in the link above. And also I'm well aware of Friedl's phenomenal now 2 year splits vs LHP albeit a very small sample size and that DB has observed every single one of those ABs. Gibaut also only threw a handful of pitches in the 8th so why not start the 9th with him? Any other day there'd be frothing vehemence why DB won't pitch guys more than an inning. I'm thinking Diaz and Farmer probably weren't available and it's just F Cruz and Sims whom he reasonably had left otherwise on the early getaway start
Well being honest I liked the part about Springer and the Reds but we all know your disdain for the Hyped NFL draft and I agree with you so let’s just ignore it and read about who they picked next week….
Ryan, you could be correct. But beyond the cleverness of the comment, you can apply that to other situations. We’d have to look it up, but I’m not certain if Yogi played or coached when DST time was implemented. I’ve visited the West Coast in the spring when the sun sets before 5 pm. So Yogi could have been referring to playing BB out there.
Jerry Springer was the best mayor Cincinnati ever had; he got the streets cleaned during the big snows of the ‘70’s.
I hope the Bengals get some protection for Joe. The mock draft I saw this morning had them taking an RB. It also said that the Northwestern kid is going to the Bears to protect Justin Fields. The Broncos don’t pick until the 6th round, so the papers here in Colorado aren’t saying much.
😆 ... Jerry's one legendary year as Mayor (1977) did coincide with the legendary local winter of '77's 3o" snowfall but did not include the legendary Blizzard of '78
I remember seeing Jerry writing his closing "monologue" that he did each night when he was an anchor. He would be in the corner of Huggs Inn or something like that just scribbling on a notepad. I would listen to his talk and always walk away thinking he had more talent than 99% of the world. Wish he would have done something more meaningful, but, it was his call.
Small quibble about the Bengals and whether they value safeties. I do not think success as measured by Pro Bowls is the standard. The determination of how they value the position is where they draft them. They selected Dax Hill in the first last year and Daryl Williams in the first in 1992. All other DBs drafted in the first round were CBs. Marvin loved CBs.
Safe to say that there is not much emphasis on safeties, and they will not be going safety in the first two straight years.
I think CB is more important, anyway, followed by the D-line. I don't care how good your secondary is...if you can't get to the QB someone will get open. It's just not possible to cover receivers for more than a few seconds. For that reason, I think you can get by with "less than great" safeties.
Also as his replacement. No way were they going to pay Bates what he will receive from the Falcons. Fingers crossed this transition works out better than the Ogbuehi/Fisher move from Whit/Zeitler in 2016.
This must've been '91 or '92 but I was actually on one of his shows for a few brief moments. No chairs were injured during this taping :-) This is when he was more Phil Donahue-esque and was taken a bit more seriously.
I always thought that he was a great anchor. Watching him as a youngster I enjoyed the energy that he and Ken Broo seemed to have when it was time for the sports report.

This is so odd. The Reds have 17 SB and have hit 16 HR. The #1 Rays have hit 3x HR = 48

Hilarious and spot on Draft Day sarcasm and commentary. I wish you could anchor the
ESPN coverage. I would tune in and stay up to watch that show.
I love Yogiisms, bring ‘em on. I didn’t know Stengel had his own as well.
A few Berra favorites:
Nobody goes here nowadays, it’s too crowded.”
Great column today, thanks!!
It IS TOO CROWDED...wherever it is!
I think this was referencing the old Yankee Stadium's outfield, but "It gets late early out there."
Ryan, you could be correct. But beyond the cleverness of the comment, you can apply that to other situations. My fave Yogi-ism, when someone asks him what time it is...
"You mean now?''
And.. . . “ you can observe a lot by just watching“
“The future ain’t what it used to be”
Do you think Yogi ever said he was “smarter than the average Berra”?
That's a classic...and I'll bet he said it, but now that you've said it HERE, you're the guy!. You need to start writing a journal.

Now, Lester Holt is ripping off J's closing line... Take care of yourselves and each other
That drives me crazy!!
Nice tribute to Jerry Springer.

Agree. Also explains why some CBs switch to safety as they slow down a bit.
Part of reason they took Hill was as leverage against Bates.
Also as his replacement. No way were they going to pay Bates what he will receive from the Falcons. Fingers crossed this transition works out better than the Ogbuehi/Fisher move from Whit/Zeitler in 2016.
I just found this in the WLWT Archives
Jerry being interviewed during a massive 1978 Riverfront Stadium concert featuring Eagles, Steve Miller Band, and Eddie Money.
