Doc, thanks for sharing those pics of Hickory Woods! Absolutely stunning! Our home course for years before retiring to Fort Myers. Tried to play almost every Sunday afternoon with my wife. We absolutely love Mike Auterson-good teacher; even better guy! Say hi from Paul and Nancy when you get a chance!

Shot 78 at Summit Hills yesterday, me and my partner cruised through the round in 2:45. Started with 3 layers, ended with a polo and a Claw. Glorious Day as Ken Broo would say.

No mention of those fall leaves that seem to have a vanishing effect on my Titleist (or your choice) of golf balls?

Hickory does a good job of keeping the fairways clean. Hit it in the rough, that’s your problem

Fall is, hands down, the best season around here. After we get past our new "6 weeks" of Winter, we should be good to go for another 8-9 months.

I worked at Coldstream Country Club from 5th grade through college. From a droopy C caddy struggling to carry singles to honor caddy doing two rounds - sometimes 45 holes - of a doubles a day, to caddy master and Evans Scholar. With stints as cart boy, bag room worker, pro shop clerk, locker room attendant and - a few Christmas breaks home from school - dishwasher in Chef Paul's kitchen.

Best. Job. Ever.

Late fall golf was - as you say - like stealing.

I can still see the course awash in reds, oranges and golds, feel the chill in the shadows of the first tee and the gradual warmth when the sun climbed over the treeline by the time you reached the dogleg on the par-five fourth.

Wonderful memories.

I hope to be a cart boy again again some day...

I have played one round of golf in the past 18 years. But, I put my clubs in the back of the ol' Cherokee the other day and I may hit the driving range. After I recover from this wisdom teeth extraction, I may hit a few! Wonderful ode to November and golf today, Doc.

"I like hosing down carts. It’s good, mindless work." That rings so very true. Sometimes, we just need good, mindless work where we don't need to think. Only something to keep us occupied, and, in your case, even better that it's at a golf course.

My father was the cart man for a little stint, after retirement as an engineer at a chemical plant in Reading, out at Circling Hills Golf Course in Harrison. Mind you, the man wasn't even a golfer to my knowledge. I'd never seen him pick up a club in his life. But he seemed to enjoy the interaction with the public and the "mindless work" of taking care of the carts. Likely enjoyed the outdoors aspect as well, having spent his career confined in a chemical plant.

But heck, for all I know, he may have snuck a round or two of golf in as well ... this is the same man who I'd never seen pick up a pool stick, yet one time on a family vacation ran the table against three straight opponents in the campground game room. He was full of surprises sometimes.

The Men are probably looking at the bye week like us unretired souls look at our scheduled vacations, and the days are dragging slowly, much like they do for us, in anticipation of that much-needed break. I'm really interested to see how they come out of the bye. They should be 5-4 going into Pittsburgh, but stranger things have happened.

Pass along a tip of the cap to Imbiber Dave. Appears I have a new steakhouse my wife and I will have to try out. She will love it, I'm sure, for the bleu cheese butter alone.

I love Hickory Woods. It's where I learned to play golf and hit the ball straight. The back nine is one of my favorite places on earth.

PS: Doc -- there seems to be a ton of head coaches who also call the offensive plays. Are there any that do that for defense?

Doc, you're on a roll with Tunes of the Day this week. J Geils performance the night the Fillmore East closed down was one for the ages. Magic Dick on the harp is still performing according to a promoter I know. On another topic, perhaps you would consider adding Disc Golf to your portfolio of retirement activities. DG'ers are some of the most friendly crew you'll ever meet, eager to help newbies. The game contains a lot of thinking and strategy similar to what you deal with on the "ball golf" course. And what's really nice, pars and birdies come quicker to new players than they would in ball golf. Take care and stay well Doc, every day in retirement is time for something new, different, and exiciting.
