The third down thing is annoying but doesn't hold a candle to the Bills. On opponents third downs they blare a train horn while they try to huddle up. How is that even legal?? Why not just shoot off fireworks while you're at it??
I didn't, but I easily could have...tuned out, turned off, and turned away from the NF of L Bengal bash Sunday to hit the yard. Stayed and watched - mainly because Loveland native son Giovanni Ricci (Panthers #45 -3rd year) He had one catch with come nice YAC, but came up short of a first down on that play. As you noted, not a good day for Carolina, or Carolina fans overall. Bengals sit right where they were one year ago after 9 (5-4) headed into the BYE week with a confidence-boosting win. End story.
I think the "Lost Decade" has moved up I-74 a smidge to Indianapolis ... the Colts torched Frank Reich today, and brought in Jeff Saturday as interim head coach. Saturday was a great player, and seems to be a respectable person, but only has three years of coaching a high school team down in Georgia under his belt.
I believe that's even less of a stellar resume than ol' Dave Shula had back in The Men's "Lost Decade."
That being said, Sunday was refreshing in the fact that the game was over by halftime, and the tickers and tempers of many fans got a well-deserved rest. But now, after the bye, the rubber meets the road. Playtime is over, and it's time to go to work, chop wood, insert favorite cliché here. It could be very fun to watch, it could be quite ugly, or it could be 8-9.
Very happy for Dusty. He'll end up in the Reds Hall of Fame, too, at some point. And, judging by his past behavior, would be gracious and thankful for the honor despite his ignominious exit.
Professional sports teams and professional sports events sure know how to drive great songs into the ground. "Seven Nation Army" being one here in the states -- it's this generation's version of "Rock and Roll Part 2" -- while over in England, they've ruined "Sweet Caroline" by playing it at every boxing event held.
SNA is the biggest sports anthem in the world. No matter to me, I still listen to it every morning because the cadence is perfect to start out a treadmill run. Run…run, run, run, run, run. :)
Can the Bengals play the NFC South EVERY week? Great home win but didn't do much to build my confidence in them. Next game is a must win division game, on the road...in primetime. Need to snap that primetime road losing streak. And then it's on to the real teams. "Playoff" football for the Bengals starts on 11/27 @ Tennessee. They'll need to get hot and stay hot. And hopefully get some guys back healthy by then.
Pittsburgh is bad, beat KC twice last year, beat Tennessee last year, beat Baltimore twice last year, and if the Jets can beat the Bills I like our chances
Well they're going to have to be at their best. Baltimore's remaining schedule is FAR easier, so winning the division will be a challenge. Bengals own the 2nd toughest remaining schedule in the league.
Good stuff Doc...my Greenhills HS friend is Tom Kinder the Bengals PA announcer.. his dad, also Tom, was the original PA announcer.
Glad you made a show at The Ludlow Garage.
Great venue, capacity is 500 but does seem less than that. We have seen some great shows there - Jesse Colin Young, Firefall, John Lodge, Justin Hayward, the Boxtops among others.
The Bengals are neither as good as they were yesterday nor as bad as they were last week. They simply don't match up well against certain teams. The Browns were in desperation mode and it showed. Yesterday the Bengals didn't play as well with Mayfield in, but too hard to judge because the game was essentially over by then. Injuries are mounting and Money Mac is no longer a sure bet. 5-4 gives hope but can only afford perhaps 2 more losses to have a chance of making the playoffs. As I look at the remaining schedule I don't see it happening.
Great Seven Nation Army line, Doc. I still like the song but, as I was flipping through channels the other night, I heard what no one should have to hear; the organist at Citizens Bank Park playing it.
Lately one of the main gripes on SOCIAL MEDIA was that the Bengals needed a running back. I just shook my head. Expecting a quiet couple weeks on that front.
My first date with my wife was to see the Smithereens. Next week is our 30th anniversary. Thanks, guys.
Still need to draft a RB. Mixon looked incredible yesterday, but let's wait to see how the rest of the year turns out. Big difference yesterday was that he looked decisive and hit the holes instead of dancing in the backfield.
I agree we need to draft a running back. I believe Mixon is 26 or 27, and RB's don't usually last past 30. Ya never know, but if there's a quality back available, they should take him.

I'm so happy I randomly decided this morning to see if you were writing again. I have so missed this space.

Doc - did Marshall Crenshaw do any of his solo stuff? I always loved "Someday, Someway".
Good question. And no. Disappointing. Was hoping for There She Goes Again.
So, given the performance under his reign, I suppose Adam will be invited back to Rule the Jungle

Place was full. 500?
If Google can be trusted … I was curious and looked it up

Your football humor schtick is 2nd to none. You had me laughIng out loud. Thanks for that.
Your great respect for Dusty is spot on and much appreciated. Thanks for sharing David Bell’s comments!
Smithereens were hotter than Georgia asphalt. Fun having a beer with you Doc. Hope to see you again.
Not sure on the Smithereens Doc. Pretty basic, nothing innovative or unique IMHO.
Not seeking unique. It's rock-n-roll.

Very appropriate song of the day Doc ... The Men blew up the Panthers to “smithereens”!!!!
