I love when Doc rips McMansion's with zero character because it is an epidemic across the country. If you ever want to see a prime example of this trend, just take a drive around Columbus, OH. We're fortunate that most of the neighborhoods have maintained the old homes.

I stand behind the Wes Miller contract extension even though it hasn't been "earned." I agree the product on the court hasn't been encouraging but I am starting to think it is largely a talent issue. Wes certainly says all the right things, appreciates the corky culture, and includes all of the old UC players. If you go by the recruiting rankings (grain of salt), he is getting some high quality commitments that could make an immediate impact.

Did you fly into BWI for this wedding? Did you eat the worlds best crabcakes at G & M near the airport. This is a must for your next visit to Annapolis or Baltimore.

I've been fearing the Mexico City Rojas for a few years and each year it looks more likely. Huge tv market and would essentially be Mexico's team.

They've been saying the same thing about Baseball since the 1800s.

Never ending story.

And as soon as the Reds start a season 3-0 , it'll be like nothing ever happened.

But I warned you about this..20 years ago.

Back when we was complaining about Votto making $14 million a year. Larkin was making 8 or 9..We can't afford it!!

Smart owners find a way to be successful. Tampa Bay Rays,Minnesota Twins, Oakland As..etc.

They find creative ways to succeed outside of mere payroll blundering.

So it CAN be done. Farm System, Scouts, Coaching etc. No FREE AGENTS!!

That's poison to the Reds. And every year, fans clammor, we need this guy! Or pay that guy 10 times what he's worth because he gave my kid an autograph...

And watch the Reds be stuck at 65 and 97 forever!

The business of baseball is ruining/has ruined baseball. Not just Reds fans suffering, BASEBALL FANS suffering. Yeah, gotta like the way the Bengals are playing, but still some questionable play calls?? Will it indeed come down to the season finale v The Ravens (quoth nevermore)? Sorry, weak effort there. Agree we all have to wonder about the Wes Miller Basketball Bearcats and his value. In the end Doc, I like your childhood home better than the gaudy replacement. Feel the same way about my own childhood home too. But then, I have a whole lot of that Irish in me too (Fraternal Grandparents came over from Ireland Gibson/O'Neill).

First, Paul is the greatest sports writer since Grantland Rice and the second best writer ever, right behind Ernest Hemingway. Third, no body is overpaid as they are paid based on someone needs, not yours. Fourth,it’s not the World Series as it’s the US and Canada Series. Fifth, 162 games, way too many. Sixth, no other manager in sports wears a uniform. Seventh, every sport except baseball has a limited number of time outs. Eight, why does the batter have to re-adjust his gloves after taking a ball? I am tired and need a nap!

How long is baseball going to be able to continue this mad money spending? The sport seems to be dying but the money keep getting larger and larger. At some point there is going to be major collapse as TV revenues and all other streams of income like stadium naming rights (something I absolutely hate) and all the money they get from concessions and other game related sales that happen at the stadium. The game has become almost a batting practice home run hitting contest. Bunting, moving runners over, stolen bases all are missing from today's game. You can't be a pitcher now in MLB if you can't throw at least 95 mph. Guys like Greg Maddux wouldn't even get looked at today coming out of high school. Locally the Reds suck and the front office seems devoted to making sure they suck for several years. Any of these "prospects" we get that actually pan out will get traded away as soon as they show ability for 3 more prospects who don't have ability. I didn't realize that when the Reds won the World Series in 1990 when I was 27 that this championship would be the last I'd see in my life. I'm 60 now and while I'm not ready to croak just yet, the Reds aren't ready to win anytime soon either. Young fans aren't very plentiful and when people my age and older start dying off, how many fans will be left?

It seems to me that the only ones who could fix Baseball are the ones who benefit the most from its predicament. If you own the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox or a dozen other Landed Gentry teams, it's 1954 again. You have 16 (or so) ML teams who draw talent from what amounts to another 16 feeder teams that may as well be called Minor League.

I love houses and neighborhoods like yours in Bethesda. And I didn't realize how similar the topographies were between that part of MD and here. That picture of Great Falls could have been taken along Route 50.

Paul, you are absolutely correct, your old neighborhood looks just like mine.

Lots of charm.

I don't hate the "McMansion", but it certainly doesn't fit into the vibe of the street.

I have slowly slipped away from MLB due to the disparity between the haves and have nots, and the TV situation.

I used to watch every Reds game, but ever since Fox Sports OH/Bally was taken off YouTube TV, I have found myself not missing watching at all.

A beer and a cigar on the back patio is much more enjoyable.

Y’all who like the McMansions are encouraged to build them on newly developed farmland in the exurbs, but please don’t tear down old homes with character in communities with character inside whatever beltway you live near to replace them with one of those boxy 2 car garage in front eyesores.

I'll say this ... the original house of the Daugherty family beats the dickens out of the "McMansion." One had obvious character, the other is sterile. Or, a more apt analogy would be 1960s-70s tunes versus today's autotune crap. Give me the former any day of the week.

Boy, oh boy, how far baseball has come (or fallen, depending on perspective) from Pete Rose's $800,000 per year, four-year contract with the Phillies in 1978 which made him MLB's highest-paid player at that time. The way it appears, $800,000 a year is now what is given to the bullpen catchers. If it keeps up at this rate with players and these ridiculous contracts, MLB will price itself out of the public consciousness. We've seen it happen with retail stores, restaurants, etc. MLB is not "too big to fail," and the sooner they realize that, then maybe -- just maybe -- some of the damage that's been done can be rectified.

UC extending Miller was a knee-jerk reaction to Fickell leaving, I believe. Has he done enough to merit the raise? Not at this point, but we'll see how things go. And, as we all know, contracts for college coaches are about as set in stone as a sand castle on the beach with the tide coming in.

Read quite often on Twitter, in the wake of the Men defeating the Browns, that these just might be the golden years of Bengal football upon us. I certainly hope so.

Nice pics. Joey Votto's contract not looking so crazy anymore. I wonder if the Mets got Bobbie Bonnia paid off and that's why they are flush with cash?

I lived in Northern VA for a bit in 2004-2005 and spent some time in Bethesda. The residents in that market don't know an economic downturn because that's where our taxpayer dollars go and flow.

Bottom line - there are too many damn people there. Beautiful countryside that was never intended for millions to reside there. And make no mistake, the hubris there is off the charts, and I guarantee the owner of that new home would not piss on you if you were on fire, especially if you approached him/her regarding their dubious decision to build on that small plot of land. All rich Democrats!!
