Freemantle was gonna return to his original 'potential for excellence' form (he'd been a BE Coaches' Pre-Season 1st Team Selection prior to his injury last year). Did he allow for his injury to get him down, lose confidence...become petulant on occasion, YUP...it was likely the first time his health had significantly impaired him). AND YES, Sean Miller will motivate him, as he will everyone on his team (it might be to date that Coach Miller's greatest impact is on Jerome Hunter, and to a lesser degree, KyKy Tandy ; )

As a guy about Doc's age, I am reminded all too frequently of our vulnerability as I witness others my age, and many younger, battle with life's calamities. I take nothing for granted, including the unpleasant and mundane, and remind myself how privileged I am to do it. Here's hoping everything is resolved quickly for your family member, Doc, that you're past it soon and can look forward to a rewarding 2023. Regarding X, Sean Miller has made a significant difference with the team he inherited by setting Freemantle on the right path, defining a clear role for Jerome Hunter, and recruiting Souley Boum, who has in a short time become a catalyst for success.

Doc, every body's forgotten about Rob Phinisee, who was just coming into his own when he broke his foot. Indiana transfer, known for great defense and as a good scorer. He's so much better than Davenport. This whole situation is on Cunningham and Keith Jenkins, who for some reason has mysteriously disappeared from the Enq sports page. They pilloried Coach Brannen, who had recruited an amazing amount of talent to UC in 2 years after Cronin left the cupboard bare. It's become normal for teams to lose 9-10 guys in the portal lately; those coaches aren't being fired. But when Brannen lost 6 (and remember, 2 came back), Jenkins used that info and a bunch of hearsay to submarine him. Then he sidled up to Miller like they were best buddies. Whole thing turned my stomach, and I have a strong stomach. Thank God Scott Springer has taken over. He's great.

Wes Miller is no Sean Miller. Not even close. He seems to have trouble making some players play unselfishly, and he makes some questionable in-game adjustments. He's been a copy of Travis Steele, except Steele was an exceptional recruiter; Miller has not been the same so far. I still think he may finally get it together, but it's been rocky. UC has made some strides this year, and Lander Nolley is a talented addition. If Phinisee comes back and fits in with DeJulius, and Miller reduces Davenport to no more than 15 mins a game and at most 5-6 very selective shots, UC might finish strong. Right now they have too many question marks in too many areas. And they lose a ton of guys when the season ends. Next year could be brutal.

I had a long talk with some friends of mine a few years ago about making "intentions" and not "resolutions". Intentions allow for falls and stumbles. Resolutions are resolute so one fail is a fail. That said, Easter-time is my New Year. The days get longer, trees start to bud and Spring clean-up can begin. I don't make resolutions based on a cold, long dark night season. As far as Wes, I have patience.

Expecting the yoga class tomorrow to be uncomfortably full. January it is. Only four of us last week and three of them were new.

All good thoughts for the loved one health issue. Wishing for a smooth as can be expected through it and out.

One year in church youth group we wrote notes to ourselves on NYE that were mailed to us a few weeks later. Not resolutions, just thoughts Not a resolution person. Dragged out an almost empty journal yesterday. Not committing to daily stuff, but more than catching up on recent deaths would be nice.

Love me some Rascals. Nice to learn that the song came out of band's time in Hawaii. Quicksilver Messenger Service put out a great Hawaii album - Just for Love. If you like psychedelic rock. Even the album cover is great.

Not every day I look forward to Monday Night Football. Today is the exception.

My resolution 4 years ago was to quit the gym. Six months prior to quitting, I started buying a few used gym quality machines and accessories at auction where gym’s had gone out of business. You’d be surprised how cheap machines, benches, and dumbbells actually are at auction because no one wants to take the time to disassemble and move them. I didn’t mind and I did it all by myself which…as you would expect…was a hell of a workout…a win-win for me and my money.

All of it was placed in an unused bedroom on our lower level where I removed the carpet and put in a rubber floor in one day. The room is of medium size which makes access to each piece of equipment quick and easy for one person to work out. Most days I’m at it and done before my wife gets up at 6:30am.

I don’t have to deal with a stranger’s body sweat on the equipment. The music and tv channel is of my own choosing. I can workout any time I feel like it.

If you have an extra room at home or unused space in your garage, I highly recommend it.

Thank you for your insight about Resolutions. I hope your family member is on the mend soon.

Sadly, Noah Ruggles will never have another Happy New Year's Eve after the OSU loss. I hope he realizes; it took a Team to get him in that stressful position in the first place

I love going outside just to renew my batteries and feel better about life. Working in the yard is great for mental health. I feel the need to connect with the earth and appreciate how beautiful this plant is and I want to be a part of someone who likes to keep it clean and protect the critters that live on it. I always put in my own wildlife garden for the birds and pollinators. I love trimming the trees and removing the weeds. And, when I go back in, I feel like I did my workout for the day and just feel better about myself in general. I also like to look at my progress for satisfaction.

Love the song and the passion Felix has when he sings it.

I don't make New Year's resolutions because when I did when I was younger, I always felt regret when I didn't keep up with them. When I start gaining weight, I just try to have enough will power to cut out sweets for a while. That hasn't been going very well of late. Here comes the guilt.

What a weekend of sports - especially college football. I fall in and out of love with college football multiple times a year. There is so much to like and dislike but when its good it is magical. TCU beating Michigan is tremendous for the sport. It reinforces the notion that pedigree, branding, and recruiting rankings only get you so far. The 12 team playoff will have its flaws but you can't deny that it will produce some amazing moments (more david and goliath scenarios).

Doc..I definitely agree with your comments etc about Wes Miller. Yesterday's game looked like a different "team" than we have seen lately. Tulane would have blown us off the floor playing like we did vs Temple. It is impossible to believe how badly we were beaten on the boards! Maybe our guys cant handle road games which, if true, means we are in for a long, sad year now that AAC games are our main diet. Without checking, i think we were taller than Temple. They just wanted the ball more which is usually coaching.

On your recommendation to check out The Banshees of Inisherin, my wife and I rented it Saturday. I generally like Irish movies and have been to Inisheer which looked a whole lot like Inisherin. I was really enjoying the movie until the first finger went missing. It did make me think a lot about what legacy you leave. If only they could have at stopped at the most one finger...

I didn't and don't typically make resolutions. I make goals. A few goals:

1. Focus more on local and less on national or global. The world is going to be what it's going to be. Loving my neighbors and my friends and family is where it's at.

2. Be more present. Be consciously in the moment.

3. More music (and Les Nessman) and more books. I've got 50 books I own that I haven't read, easily. Time to plow through some of those and enjoy those.

4. Be a guest Hemingway!

Doc, thanks for 2.0. It's been so great. I've enjoyed the thoughts and the interactions and the 2.0 Mobsters. Hopefully you found my Nuxy story in the comments. haha

Who Dey! Go Reds! Go 'Cats! Go Raiders (Wright State)! Go Flyers! Go X! Go UC! I love my local teams!

Happy New Year! Felix continues to have an outstanding voice even at a mature age. It is unbelievable that the (Young) Rascals have still never been nominated for the RHOF.

Our Planet Fitness wasn't too crowded yesterday afternoon, but I dread the next few weeks. Overall, I find them to be the best fitness chain I've belonged to over the past 50 years. Clubs are clean, managers actually do work, there are two of most weight machines, and there are plenty of cardio options. My only complaint is that they are too focused on 'lunk control' rather than teaching and enforcing workout etiquette. As more 'newbies' start working out this year, this is my list of things that make you a 'lunk' :

1. Sitting on a machine and using your phone or staring into space while others are waiting.

2. Using the benches in the dumbbell area to rest your weights. (Many younger people seem to think the primary purpose of these benches is to put their weights on them when they can easily just put them on the floor to free up the bench for its intended use).

3. Taking up a Smith machine to do other exercises or while they are using other machines. I've seen people tie up a machine for an hour and only do 3-4 sets that actually utilize the machine.

4. Two people who work out together and use both machines at once instead of alternating on one.

5. Using multiple machines at once and not letting anyone work in while they are using the others.

6. Not wiping down equipment after finishing.

7. Leaving the weights on the machines or on the floor, or not putting dumbbells back where they belong.

I'm sure there are others and feel free to add them to this list. Everyone could have more productive workouts if simple workout etiquette was followed, and it is up to the gym employees to explain this when people join.

Doc, I agree about Miller. Nice guy, great pedigree, prior HC success BUT they are heading into the Big 12 and he better recruit some better players pronto or they will be at the bottom of that conference for 2-3 years and his 5 years would be up. He needs 3 five star recruits or portal additions in the next few months or he will be in jeopardy of being a candidate for unemployment.

Well done, Doc. I hope everything is OK with the family member's illness and there is a quick recovery.

Re resolutions, I think we should always be working to improve ourselves and not just look at areas n need of improvement on the first of the year.

Agree re Wes Miller. The inconsistency of the team is infuriating. For a guy that some fans think is a terrific recruiter, it is jarring to see four of the five starters are Brannen recruits.

Happy new year.
