Nice to see so many Hopper-heads on TML. If you want to see the difference between a very good painter and a world class artist, take a look at this article about how his painting Morning Sun was conceived. The sketch of how he wanted the light to hit the subject is telling. If you want to see Morning Sun in person, it’s been hanging at the Columbus Museum of Art since 1954. Coincidently, the sketch of Morning Sun is at The Whitney.
Nice trip report. Love both Hopper and The Eagles. Started reading a Martha Grimes novel in Italy that had a Hopper cover. Hotel Paradise - told through the eyes of an eleven year old girl. Mood fits the cover. Rather than abscond with the copy someone had left on loft shelf, I checked it out of local library.
Bengals made me happy on Sunday.
Rooting for Dusty's Astros in the Series. Follow a Houston fan on twitter. He was semi-fretting about something early in playoffs. I tried to remind him that Dusty is a players coach. He looks out for his people.
Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers didn't suffer from playing in Green Bay, whose population sits somewhere between Mt. Pilot and Wichita's. Buffalo has no profile. Kansas City has food and music cred, but is no bigger than Cincy.
Carson Palmer used to complain that playing here hampered his Star. I didn't buy it from him and I'm not buying it now. The Franchise lacks notice because it has never had the kind of sustained success that KC, GB or Buffalo have. When that changes (and under JB, it just might), the attention will come.
I love those Hopper paintings. I will definitely visit that museum next time I'm in NYC. Thanks for showing them.
Doc, there is no doubt IMO that the Men are out to prove your long-held theory that that you don't have to run in the NFL to set up the pass. While the glorious air raid unfolds, watching poor Joe Mixon trying to score from 3 or 4 yards out without meaningful blocking and entirely on his own accord is painful, to say the least. I had hopes this season but am facing facts after 7 games.
Full disclosure, I took Joe M. with my first-round fantasy pick and that was an obvious mistake when looking at my 2-5 scorecard so this statement involves sour grapes as a foundation. Am I wrong? Is there any shred of hope it will turn around? I think not...
Next falsehood to be disproven: you have to be able to run the ball in the afc north. Bull crap. You have to have the threat of the run. Mixon can do that.
Visited our son (and later his now wife too) who lived in NYC for several years B4 moving to NC to raise a family. Lots of good memories … Katz Deli, Plays, Letterman shows, Ellis Island, etc. Certainly not a place for the budget minded however. #❤️NYCbring💴
Here's my take on the Eagles: I became an Eagles fan organically...it was made from musicans who were already making music I loved. Because, of course, it all started with Buffalo Springfield. And then they added Joe. Bonus! It isn't my fault that they eventually became the biggest hit makers around, so I won't apologize for being a fan. And I saw them in concert a couple of times (including the Riverfront Stadium show) before that ticket price inflation.
Cincinnati as Podunk isn't going away as long as the Cowherds of the sports world are having sway. I say roll with it and take the advantages that come with being the perceived underdog.
Go Dusty! I liked him when he was here, and I can't blame him for my general dislike of the Astros.
I'm not sorry you left the Enquirer btw.. You were about the only reason to read it in recent years, and you seem to be a little looser here, as if freed from corporate restraints or something. Keep it up please.
Not big on The Eagles but LOVE Edward Hopper. I have a collection of his as one of the few coffee table books I own. And it appears the OLine is getting its “season legs” as described by Frank Pollack. They’ve earned some love.
You hit the nail on the head with Lou Anarumo. It's quite possible that he might end up being the best D-coordinator in Bengals history -- and that includes the renowned Dick LeBeau.
Don't just take the first seven games of this season as a sample size ... look at what the man did, adjustment-wise, for the entirety of the playoffs last year, after halftime.
Raiders: 6 points (two field goals)
Titans: 10 points (field goal, touchdown)
Chiefs: 3 points (field goal)
Rams: 10 points (field goal, touchdown after ticky-tack holding penalty on Logan Wilson)
That's a stretch of 11 games straight where Lou A's defense has allowed only two touchdowns in the second half. I'll take that every day and twice on Sunday. And, if the Bengals offense had performed like it did against Atlanta on Sunday, during that stretch, they'd be 11-0 and defending Super Bowl champions. But yes, if its and buts were candies and nuts ...
I'll humbly acknowledge that I was fine -- and erroneous -- with Dusty getting the boot after the disastrous 2013 WC game in Pittsburgh. I felt he had run his course here, and some of his decisions were head-scratching to say the least. But, with the advantage of a rear-view mirror, I can see that he is probably the last good Reds manager we will have had for a very long time. Here's to him and finally grabbing that ring this year.
Outlaw Man! Great tune!! Forgot all about it. I may not have heard it in 20-30 years. I love the Eagles. I had the Desperado 8-track around 1974. Google it, kids.
Agreed on The Eagles. But, what great band hasn’t been formulaic?!? IE: Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Bruce, Melloncamp, The Temptations, Chicago, and the list continues. Paul, keep on crankin’ with the terrific news/sports/family posts. You’re “wearing” retirement very well.
Great point for this TML, Terry. Nothing is new. Everyone borrows, or sometimes steals, for inspiration. The Eagles heard CSN’s harmonies and used them to their benefit. Hopper didn’t invent Impressionism or the use of shadows. He did, however, use light and shadows to make an impressionist painting look realist. Dusty Baker is caught in a 1970’s managerial time warp that he learned watching Tommy Lasorda.
Fully agree on Hopper ... by far the best painter IMO: American or otherwise. And my opinion is not educated other than the one art appreciation class I had to take in college. I've spent many hours just gazing at Hopper's paintings and wondering just what you did, "who are these people." The settings always seem lonely and sparse, but genuinely real - basically lonely people who aren't physically alone. There is basically only one artist that I'd travel to see and pay for the privilege of seeing his work and that's Hopper.
I've always liked Dusty and am glad he'll (probably) get a championship, but I just can't pull for the Astros. They should have been stripped of their title and perhaps management should have been forced to sell the team for their seeming complicity in the cheating scandal, but that's water under the bridge now. If it's possible to pull for a person on a team (Dusty) and not the team overall that's what I'll do.
And finally, fully agree on the joy of seeing grown kids married and making their way together. But ouch, picking up the checks can be painful.
I wasn't familiar with Hopper, even though the diner piece is one I've seen many times.
But, coincidentally, I read this article today about an upcoming Hopper documentary:

Glad you're back. I love Hopper! If you like Hopper you'll probably like Magritte
The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac are my favorite rock and roll bands!
Too damn funny

Looking forward to your Hopper-inspired book of short stories, Doc! 😉

The Bengals D also held KC to 3 points in the 2nd half in their 1st meeting last season. That was the game they locked up the AFC North.
You are correct, Tim. Lockdown defense is what Lou has them playing in the second half. That is for sure!
He will likely be pursued for a head coaching job, as our former DC Mike Zimmer was.
