I agree with you on John Sadak...however, I like him. I can be anywhere in the house and when I hear him, I fly back to the TV, knowing we did something great, or at least pretty darn good. I like his excitement. I think it is real for him. His best comment, after DLC did his class act, was: (LDC) ..."The Human Highlight Reel." (He didn't say "LDC", I was just too lazy to type it out.) So I cut John some slack. I like his excitement because I'm not sitting in a bar or somewhere where the excitement is in the room. And how about Casey? I know you all liked him, but he never took a breath from subject to subject. He drove me crazy when he was calling a game, or even in the booth. He was loved for his enthusiasm.
I feel very bad for Bobby Huggins. He really does need to get his fishing gear together and head to Florida and chill out the rest of his life. Maybe he can come back and give the kids in Morgantown his wonderful basketball summer camps.
I'm happy the Reds are resting up for the second half of their season. I don't see them giving up at this point. I only worry about the pitching slumps late in the game. The players have to work twice as hard to cover for the lack of pitching.
Jim Day is the best!!
Took a golf lesson a few days ago to refresh my....uh...memory. So yesterday I spent three hours at Winton Woods at the Mill practice center. I could hardly walk when I came home as you have to walk all over the course there to practice. They used to drive you out there and pick you up...now it's $16.50, all the balls you want are out there to knock around for as long as you like. It was me and the Boys...and they just remind me how far I can't hit the ball.
Your line of thinking is flawed. What if he was out in public randomly firing a weapon but, you know, didn’t hurt anybody? Then, several years later, decides to give it another try. His aim being off a bit the first time. Sure, let’s allow him to continue as such just so long as he never actually hurts anybody. Prison time is a cure for alcoholism, said nobody ever. It’ll cure innocent people dying…real quick like.
Ahh, Sadak. There's times I really appreciate your passion, but passion is no ordinary word (courtesy of Graham Parker), so save it for the great moments. I love base hits, stolen bases, strikeouts ,etc, but I don't do dances on the floor. And I often feel you're dancing in the booth. Dial it down some. Please.
Totally correct about the break. They need it. Playing India every game makes no sense with all the infielders on hand. I believe it's the reason his average has dropped. And all these pitchers already in almost half the games? We better hope the injured guys they say are coming back actually come back. We may see arms falling off mid-pitch, if not. Go Reds!
Batting 3rd hasn't helped, either. He's trying to be a power hitter. At leadoff, he was spraying the ball,, just trying to get on, and he was finding holes. Bell could put him back at the top, drop Friedl and McClain a spot, and it might work OK. Steer is also struggling at 7th. That could be because he keeps getting moved around in the field. India definitely looks tired and isn't handling his slump well.
As a lifelong Reds fan I think I’ve been trained into being a fan of all the team announcers because of all the good ones we’ve been lucky enough to
listen to. Marty, Joe, George Grande, Chris Welsh, the Cowboy.....I’ve tried hard to like Sadak but he is so over the top all the time it’s almost nauseating. This Reds team is good and their exciting to watch, we get it, we don’t need to hear about during every single at bat
We should at least consider the possibility that John Sadak isn’t directing his boffo, Rococo play-by-play at the demographic of baseball consumer who subscribes to and comments on the blogs of retired sports columnists. I’m on board with the “maybe act like you’ve been there before” request, but I’m also the person described above, so…The future belongs to the video game set, and to dreadlocked, drip-clanging, bloodless wild antelope looking for slap traditions…which we all agree we love to watch.
Bobby should be in jail. Everyone deserves a second chance, except when what could have includes possibly killing innocent people. He got a second chance anyway and, clearly, has blown it. No pun intended. What if he had crippled or killed your child? Your children? Thankfully that didn’t happen during rounds 1 and 2. Why does he not deserve to be in jail so as to avoid said round 3?
Now then…
Couldn’t agree more regarding Sadak. Literally everything is emotional as it blows past his lips. Everything. I recall earlier this year him commenting that Fraley was in a slump. Believe he was hitting about a buck 80 at the time. Look, appreciate what Fraley has brought to the team thus far. The good old 162 shows he’s been a career 200 hitter. Here’s hopin’ he can continue this ride. The back of his baseball card says chances aren’t great. Either way…Slumping? Really? Hmmmm.
Also, agree the home run celebs are way played out. Plus, the fungo bat they use as their weapon of choice is, ummmm, hardly capable of striking fear in anyone. Could you get yourself out of a wet paper bag with it? You know, as it lays there limply…I guess that’s a word…over its current possessors shoulder? Sorry, not my weapon of choice. In battle or inside said wet paper bag.
Looking forward to the most important season 2 in Redleg baseball in an awfully long time. Run DLC, Matty MC and the rest of the crew are gonna get after it, that’s for sure. MUST SEE TV.
I hear you re safety/Huggins...however, my son is an alcoholic who has spent some time in jail and it has never, ever, helped him in any way. He just puts more guilt on himself and gets further depressed. It's not a disease that just goes away, for sure.
Jail? Over incarcerate much? He did not hurt anyone. Could have, but did not. Such a facile argument. Two DUIs in 18 years. I am not excusing it, but simply pointing out facts. How long do you want to put him in jail for? A week? A month? None of that will cure an alcoholic. Anything longer is an overreaction.
Are we compassionate humans or overreactive punitive folks? I think you are in the latter category.
I assume WVU told Huggins he could resign gracefully with dignity or he would be fired for cause if he elected not to resign. It looks like he’s daring the university to do it. I agree with you, Doc, it’s long overdue for him to get off the bottle, take care of his health and enjoy the fruits of a terrific career. It looks like it’s going to get messy and the only winners will be the lawyers for both sides.
What’s odd about this newest situation is that Bob’s lawyer was working to finalize Bob’s severance when a different, Ohio based, attorney sent the U a letter saying Bob did not formally quit. It’s all starting to sound like that Seinfeld episode where George quit his job then decided he didn’t want to quit so he showed up the next day as if nothing happened.
Sadak makes a routine grounder sound like the final out of the World Series. Now I almost enjoy seeing how over the top he can be . De La Cruz is going to go very him plenty of opportunities
I used to be a Sadak apologist but... He's been a little (a little Andy? ) over the top lately. Sometimes you need to just shut the F up and let the moment speak for itself. Jim Day is a real person and comes off as lucky to be working with a major league baseball team. He's people and the players sense that and let him in. Huggins got a pass here in Cincy, I saw him drive away from a watering hole hammered, and I suspect he has everywhere he's been. He needs to be in the program and concentrate of making amends. I hope he makes it.
The reality is that Brandon Woodruff, Brewers' Ace, is better than anyone the Reds have coming back in August. It's no surprise the last two series the Reds have lost have been to the Braves and Brewers, two first-place teams (Brewers a win away from getting it right back), both with playoff expectations, etc. While the Reds have beat better teams, the reality is that they don't match up well against the best teams in baseball, because they allow too many runs.
The Reds are tied for Top-5 in BABIP (still getting lucky), which explains how theyre overcoming being top-5 worst in earned runs, BBs and home runs surrendered. It doesn't matter if CES, or two more Ellys join the lineup, because so long as the Reds are running out Luke Weaver and Brandon Williamson, they cannot be considered serious contenders, hardly competiitors.
All that is to say that Nick Krall must get the pitching. Someone like Luis Castillo can command any prospect below the MLB-level, but you'll find Reds fans hesistant to make these kind of moves. And to those people I say, it's been 30 + years folks. MLB success in small-market towns is rare, brief, and fleeting. Waiting for another full slate of 162-games, all that time for things to go wrong, while the Reds are in 1st place at the Break, would be a massive mistake.
Dan Hoard is just as much over the top as Sadak is, especially when he’s doing a Bengals game. It was like nails on a chalk board when “ADRIEL JEREMIAH GREEN”scored a touchdown.
Dan Hoard was asked how he thought Sadak was doing, his answer," it's like packing way too many suitcases for a trip". I agree both need more radio silence.
The Reds needed this run to grab first place. They don’t need to sustain THAT pace now that they have taken over the lead. If they kept up that pace, Reds would win division by 12 games.
Gonna be a bit of a boring week without Reds baseball, but that's ok. The team (bullpen especially) could use a break.
We drove up for the game Saturday and what a great decision that was! If you've never been to American Family Field, I highly recommend it. VERY cool ballpark. Beautiful inside and very well designed. Fans tailgate outside which surprised me for a baseball game. Also, every time I've visited Milwaukee I've found the people there to just be amazingly nice. It might just be my second favorite city. And of course the game was incredible. Getting to see EDC steal every base in person was so awesome.
I'm with you on Sadak. Overall I like him but he seems harder to listen to this year. I think he and Larkin are the worst TV combo out of our available possibilities. Chris Welch is a nice compliment to Sadak, as well as Brantley. Brantley is growing on me more and more this year (I don't listen of radio very often). I love his insight into the game.
As for the Viking helmet...I found it odd at first this year but clearly every MLB team has been told they can do something. The Brewers wear Cheeseheads. Fans can buy Viking helmets or Cheeseheads at their respective teams' stores. Gotta think that has a little something to do with it, also. Any opportunity to sell more stuff is welcome, I'm sure.
Let's go, Reds! I hope they can stay hot and maybe buy some pitching help before the deadline.
The Viking hat & cloak are now a "tradition"...and because baseball players are all very superstitious, I don't believe that is going away any time soon. Looks like they are getting photos each time and perhaps there will be a photo book or poster in the near future as they are having fun with the poses.
Sorry, but “THAT BALL HAD A FAMILY!!” was totally contrived. Guarantee he practiced that one in the mirror and had it queued up. I like Sadak, but he suddenly seems keenly aware that every call may go viral, and he has let that color his performance.
The inference is the ball was senselessly murdered…and IT had a family.
There are very few tag lines used anymore by the announcing media that aren’t contrived and for good reason. Great lines produce clicks and that “family” line produced a lot of them.
Hell, Chris Berman and Thom Jackson had some of the best lines In the history of the NFL on NFL Primetime. Does anyone think those words just fell from their mouths? Berman’s collusion of odd names for players? Jackson’s “He Got Jacked Up!”? All in a script, live on TV.
Thought the All Star break was probably well-timed for "American's Team." In years' past I would have been all "don't break the momentum!" but I have a feeling these kids won't. They do need the breather, whether they know it or not. Heck, so do we!
I do have to take issue with your home run celebration take, on two fronts:
1) The narrative of pretty much everything is driven by constant content. My 16 year old routinely checks TikTok or Twitter to see how the photo of the guys in Viking helmets looks and is playing online - the one he literally JUST saw them snap moments earlier. My Gen X mind can rail about how crazy that is, but it simply is. Play the game or potentially lose relevancy.
2) They are kids, and they haven't "been here before." They can have a little fun - and that's the Mom in me! LOL
As for John...he seems to be a swell person who enthusiastically enjoys his job and life. Yes, I have to mute him now and again, too, but...eh, it's all good. His style flows well with the current run the Reds are on. It's when they aren't on that run that the exuberance should be brought down a decibel or two. But, we are NOT used to any homerism in these parts and that's OK. It's who we are as fans. I will take the Cowboy and Tommy any day of the week.
I do love how Jim Day just lets the players talk. That is a rare thing in some corners - and yes, his time with Votto is always special, but joey is just always special. I really hope the Reds can keep him employed after he's done playing. He's a gem that I have appreciated more as time as has gone on and hope others have as well!
I love when Day sees the water keg coming his way and keeps his mouth shut and keeps the interview going as though nothing is happening right behind the player who is going to be doused....I noticed DLC always looks behind him when Day interviews him.
I've found myself, over the past few weeks, passing the slow time at work watching old YouTube clips of historic game moments, such as Scully's call in the '86 World Series, Game Six on Buckner's botch, or even Curt Gowdy's call of the Immaculate Reception in '72. How they would let the silence, in between their commentary, tell the story was absolutely amazing.
Sadak is obviously pouring his heart and soul into the gig, no doubt, but I hope with more years under his belt that, down the road, he can let the silence tell the story as much as his vocabulary.
Some commented on social media yesterday that maybe -- no joke -- Huggins was intoxicated when he submitted his resignation in that statement, and doesn't remember doing so, hence the fight now that he didn't really resign. Either way, it's time for Huggy Bear to move along and focus on his remaining years of life, while not tarnishing a career that already has seen some blight spots.
I agree with you on John Sadak...however, I like him. I can be anywhere in the house and when I hear him, I fly back to the TV, knowing we did something great, or at least pretty darn good. Great analogy 😂😂

I don't even know what that means. "That ball had a family.'' What?
It did not make sense. Period. I have to mute that dude. He makes my head hurt.
The inference is the ball was senselessly murdered…and IT had a family.

They’re printing tee shirts with “that ball had a family” so you know this is just fanning the flames of the next goofy line 😆
I thought the line was clever. Not as clever as Doc’s Run-DLC line but clever nonetheless.
Of course the best line ever in this city was Andy Mac’s call when XU beat No. 1 UC; “Cincinnati. Number 1 in the country and number 2 in the city.”
Well…Andy Mac’s son suggested his dad come up with a line prior to the game to say at the buzzer if XU pulled off the upset.
That was the line. Contrived? Yes. Brilliant? Oh, hell yes. I hear that from XU friends every damn year before the Crosstown Shoot Out. 🤮

I'd disagree re Homer-ism. Might I intro you to Dave Lapham? There once was a man named Nuxhall. . .
Ah, yes, but I suppose since both actually played for the franchises they "homered" for my brain gives them a pass....
I've found myself, over the past few weeks, passing the slow time at work watching old YouTube clips of historic game moments, such as Scully's call in the '86 World Series, Game Six on Buckner's botch, or even Curt Gowdy's call of the Immaculate Reception in '72.
