Been fans of Mission BBQ since they opened that location a few years ago. Props to them for the way they respect and honor people like Sid; he’s clearly earned it. Also, the food and service are top notch!

EDLC looked solid, Hunter was meh. He still makes that “1 bad pitch” too often. He made a few of them and got the L. We need all the hope and promise we can get these days. Sports may be the only thing I turn on the TV or news for over the next 4 years.

Elly is far from a finished product yet. Here's hoping making the all-star team doesn't go to his head. He's a fantastic talent, but there's still some holes in his game that have to be fixed. It wouldn't surprise if he wears down quickly in the 2nd half, given all the base running energy he expends on top of the extracurricular hoopla he deals with. Because he's so young, the errors and base running fubars can be forgiven and fixed. The Ks are troublesome. But what a interesting first full season. Remarkable. So far.

Hunter belongs in the All Star game. His advanced metrics this year are amazingly good. Terrible run support has dinged up his W-L record. But he's made steady progress, although he loses concentration when things don't go right. Fix that and he stands to move up into ace territory. He, Ledolo, and Abott have all performed at a star level to date. Encouraging stuff.

Both Greene and DLC are bling type guys with enormous talent. The dream is that it will get channeled into steady, sustainable, long-term careers. But, we gotta remember that the Reds can't afford to sign many huge talents to long term contracts. The upside is that both will make for a huge haul of high-end young talent when time comes to move them. As I see it, it's much more fun to watch a barrel of high end, young talent develop into good major leaguers than watch one or 2 superstars languish on teams with loads of marginal vets. Right?

Nice move by Maximus. Well done.

I'll start with yesterday's TML first. Doc requested that if we couldn't post something positive then don't post. I couldn't muster up anything positive, so I honored his wishes. Unfortunately, some others did not. Did one guy actually cancel his subscription because Doc made a thoughtful and respectful post? I'm still not sure what that was about, but oh well. Free for all kids don't know what they're missing (and no, I didn't receive a bribe to write that).

As for The Men, they have been snake bitten when trying to obtain that first SB win. If they could just get that first one...

As for the Anthem girl, that was truly atrocious. She claimed she was inebriated, but I've gotten up and sang karaoke after a few adult beverages and sounded better than that. And I can't sing a lick.

Congratulations to your FIL, much deserved recognition.

Two things I neglected to include in my earlier post: Congratulations to your father in law for his well deserved recognition. And a question: Why do we need Anyone singing the Anthem for something as trivial as the HR Derby? Doesn't that trivialize the anthem itself?

Interesting question. But is there ever a legit sporting event where a rendition of the National Anthem isn't a plus? I like the brief interlude of respectful silence before competition begins. Kinda a reminder of the bigger picture we operate under. Is the Home Run Derby more a farcical exhibition than a legit event? Borderline. Dead smack in the middle for me.

To be honest, I would probably prefer that moment of respectful silence to the playing of the Anthem for anything short of an Olympic medal ceremony. Because, like so many other beautiful things, the playing of the NA has devolved onto another angry chapter in the dispiriting saga of the great Culture War.

I would miss it, of course. There are a lot of things I miss about the country I grew up in. But until we find a reason to fight for each other as Americans rather than against each other, it will ring more hollow than it deserves to.

My optimism regarding The Men is pretty strong at this point. It assumes that surely the coaches and players know they have to avoid the slow starts and hit the ground running in the first game. Avoiding preseason injuries is a good thing, of course, but if they’re not dialed in on September 8th, the AFC North will crush their hopes quickly. As for our good friend, Tee Higgins, he pretty much needs to catch everything sent his way if he wants to cash in next year or whenever. He knows that Ja’Marr is likely to be Number 1 in the Queen City for a while so a fabulous highlight reel for 2024 appears mandatory.

Regarding Mission BBQ and their veteran appreciation work, well, hats off to them. Growing up with the Greatest Generation all around me was a blessing that I have thought about my whole life. Living through the Depression and WWII gave them a sense of relief and accomplishment that hasn’t happened since in my opinion.

I asked plenty of questions about what happened and for the most part, I was politely ignored by the vets in my neighborhood. My father would only say he did his job. About the only time you might hear something interesting was if two of them got together and discussed the past without sending me outside. Here’s to Sid! Thank you, sir!

Congratulations to Sid for his well deserved recognition. He appears to still be active and healthy and reminds me of my FIL, Gus. He died at 93 but was active until the end. My wife was fortunate to get him on an honor flight a few years before he passed, and that was a highlight of his life.

I think McClain and Lodolo will be more important to the success of the Reds. They aren't limelight guys, but just get the job done when healthy. The key to future playoff runs will be good health and better coaching.

I never heard of Ingrid Andress (any relation to Ursula?), but I assume she is a pop singer whose music is played at Planet Fitness. Her inability to sing the anthem is just another illustration how important autotune is to modern music. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I think the Righteous Brothers are probably the best duo of all time. I always thought they were brothers until I saw the Spector documentary on Showtime (great documentary). Their totally contrasting voices were each excellent on their own, but even better in harmony. Spector sure had a talent for finding talented artists and producing fabulous music.

Another thing that Sid and Gus had in common is they both did a great job raising their daughter.

I would add Carl Lewis as one of the worst singers of the SSB. In the middle of his rendition, he stopped and said, "uh oh ". Indeed....

Happiness is Sports! Cheers to Happy Tuesday....Looking forward to RunDLC doing something extraordinary to make the crowd Gasp! But, first, he must get on base. Should be fun.

I'm behind Bengals no matter what. Been hanging on all these years and each one seems more promising. In the end, all will be well. Wow, 1965 Hit. It feels older than it is....I was thinking 1950 something...good tune, as always.

The thing I remember most about the Barr strangulation of the SPB was Marty B commenting afterward that she "ought to be arrested" for it. I didn't see Gaye's performance, I'll have to Google it. My all time favorite was the guy who used to play it on the trumpet in Dallas. I really thought that was cool.

The most insidious ear worm I have ever had was hatched when I heard the SPB played by a trio of bagpipers. The entire bar was tilting their heads left and right like dogs trying to understand a command.

Yikes. That's too brutal to contemplate!

My dad used to play it on his Trumpet. Anything like that on trumpet brings tears to my eyes...brings dad back to me. Beautiful....He used to close a bar in Lodi Wisconsin by playing taps at the bar...then the woman who worked in the kitchen had a trumpet also and she played taps back from the kitchen...it was like an echo...very haunting. We all left the bar with tears in our eyes at closing time.

That's cool as hell. Taps, played at a certain tempo, always touches me.

Do people pay to hear this woman sing? Does she, like, sell records? Never hear anyone change key so often, with bad vocal mechanics. Rosanne was worse because of the disrespect but in a way, this is worse, because it was an earnest attempt to sing it well. She should never have. been asked. Nothing tops Whitney Houston's version.

Today, after watching her own “performance”, she realized she was an alcoholic and put herself in rehab. I’ve had friends and family members that denied their daily use of alcohol was a real problem. She did and I wish her the best.

the problem with the Reds is this: this past weekend I went to New Buffalo Michigan with my wife and we were walking in and out of the shops. I had a Reds hat on and one of the old guys running the store talked about coming to games with his kids during the Big Red Machine days. he then told me he loved watch De La Rosa (I know he meant Elly) but my point is that there are very few memories of the Reds from say 1979 till now (Take out 1990, 99, 10 and 12) but an entire generation of Reds fans have grown up with nothing but hope that never comes. I sure hope that the current crop grow up like the mid to late 80;s Reds did to get over the hump in 1990.

Doc we need a little Ike and Tina from the Wall of Sound

Today was great and I felt good after reading this. Today is the kind of “Stick to Sports” I’d love to see more; and congrats to Sid for well deserved recognition. It’s difficult to be optimistic about the Reds but you have me there today. I missed the anthem rendition because I refuse to pay additional fees for ESPN+, so I won twice with that decision. Looking forward to watching the game tonight.

I gotta disagree about Barr, she isn’t a Grammy nominated singer and was just trying to be funny (she wasn’t). Ingrid is suppose to be able to carry a time, but instead she gave us the worst pitch any mlb ballpark has ever had!

Happy for your father in law and the BBQ place. And that he is still here to enjoy it.

ASG is usually AL beating up on NL. There are so many interleague games now during the season that the novelty has worn off. Might make for better game. Go Elly! Go Hunter! The honor is real.
