That's another thing. Why do we still have so many jobs when we're retired! I think I work more now than when I worked. I work harder just trying to get out of jobs now. People need to understand we need privacy at a time like this.

ALWAYS enjoy your topics (the myriad of them) and often enjoy as well your phrasing ...for me (how could it not be) the topic that struck me today was 'Jillian the Magnificent' and your middle-of-the-nite song for her (mine with our daughter was a simple 'doo wah diddy, there she was just a walk'n down the street' while walking endlessly around the house ; ) ...you must have a better voice than I do. Maybe try singing yourself to sleep (or just accept 5 hours is the new norm ; (

Try a white noise machine. It works wonders for me. There are settings for different relaxing sounds like ocean or crickets. I wouldn’t recommend rain showers or brook. Those make me have to get up to use the bathroom.

Enjoy the daily musings. No help with the no sleep, couple of cocktails always do the trick. Could care less about the draft or the guys busted for gambling. Big business will always tilt to what’s in its best interest, always has always will. What say you about Lodolo in his last two starts? Both since the Hunter Green extension. Stinkers. Putting to much pressure on himself or frustration he was second? Why do an extension once the season starts? Just seemed awkward with the timing.

Not sleeping is a bad thing …no good advice I only had the problem for a week once but the daughter in law is a medical doctor and she swears by melatonin….. no more talk about the Reds waste of time and the NFL draft so bring back the goats and dog stories …

I take Zzzquil, and actually Kroger's generic version at half the cost, virtually every night. Do the same and this problem is solved. Yes, nothing is without a tradeoff. But me, I'll take the sleep.

Expand full comment

Zzzzzzzzquil is 'off label' benadryl, which means you're taking an allergy med specifically for the 'drowsiness' side fx. You can build up a tolerance and constantly need an updose to maintain effect. Could cause next morning fogginess, which is probably not the best plan if you're faced with a long or difficult morning commute. This also maybe could be to blame for Doc's sudden onset insomnia, as high dosing on benadryl or other antihistamines for the allergy address can also hype some people up on the insomnia scale

Expand full comment

Probably want to avoid anything else along with this, to include alcohol or other analgesic PM products which have it. benadryl is not something you much want to combine with something else for the elevated brain and energy sapping fx

Expand full comment

Thing is, I've been taking it for years, with random weekly breaks here and there. It still works just as good. Definitely morning grogginess, but again the sleep is achieved.

Expand full comment

Next time you take a holiday from benadryl you might consider trying good quality theanine for improved alpha wave and REM restorative sleep cycles ... or even as a direct address for the morning grogginess, as it imparts 'calm focus' (and morning caffeine improvement fx) allowing sleep (particularly with a deep breathing/meditation adjunct) rather than making you 😴 sleepy

But what if I already take a much more natural, medicinal per the state of Ohio, remedy to lower anxiety and promote relaxation??

With ZzzQuil, It's like being able to double-team a pain with both Tylenol AND ibuprofen. Plus, unlike bendryl, it has alcohol and high-fructose corn-syrup, a much more pleasant experience.

Expand full comment

lol ... alcohol and HFC both negatively impact deep restorative sleep and immunity and can damage the brain function, plus the alcohol contraindication with benadryl due to potential for 'permanent' sleep state such as likely befell Mike Zimmer's son

Not a comment, but a question....is the attendance number the Red's announce every game the actual attendance or number of seats sold?

Expand full comment

I wondered the same and the answer is unknown because each MLB team computes attendance in different ways. Some teams count tickets scanned at the gate the day of the game. Some teams count sold tickets even if that ticket goes unused.

For the Reds, a fan can only hope they count tickets scanned at the gate. If they count tickets sold, and they have less than 5k attendance on a day, that shows an incredibly weak season ticket holder base. That’s the first ingredient in the recipe for disaster.

Probably need a reset after Vegas trip. Sorry. No real advice. When I can't sleep I give up and take a book downstairs to read, usually sitting at the counter in the kitchen. Cat loves it. Eventually go back to bed and at least pretend to sleep some of those nights. Will eventually get back on track. I have friends with chronic insomnia. It's not fun.

Reread books you love. Can be soothing.

In February the question of restless legs came up. My former brother in law, who I miss all the time, used to say he had dancing legs. Emily told me to take Magnesium, but said was usually a deficiency that women have. Not a drug.

Yep, good luck NFL. Whatever piddly souls the leagues possessed are long gone.

Possibly the closest thing the NFL may have to a conscience has an office down at 1 Bengals (i.e. Paycor) Way. Carrying on in the Brownian fashion of the resolute lone voice in the wilderness the rest of the owners some of the time begrudgingly acknowledge as having been prescient on certain internal issues

Awake when you should be sleeping? Me? I start praying "Hail Mary's" - the Rosary - 10 is a decade (lookitup if you don't already know...) I never make it through 10, usually not even 5 before I fall peaceuflly to sleep. "Lord give me rest, give me peace...Hail Mary..." Sweet Dreams Doc. Works for me.

CBD Oil. I began taking it to manage arthritis pain but it has proven to be a great sleep enhancer.

Evidence suggests the endocannabinoid system is the physiological basis of the very real placebo effect. The more smoke you blow up your ass the better you will feel. You want FULL SPECTRUM product (google 'entourage effect') and holding it under your tongue for longer delivers more goodness into your bloodstream

I have not. It is not a quick fix for pain relief or sleep. My doctor said to allow for 6 weeks to 3 months for it to build up in your system. He said he had some patients who swear by it while others had no benefit from it. My goal was to relieve pain. Sleep enhancement was an unexpected bonus.

best of luck 'kicking pain to the curb' and to a good nite's slumber.

I would suggest high level THC and a Cheech & Chong' getting wasted model is not the proper approach. Small ritualistic 'microconsumption' administration in moderation is more the way to go ... 'tune up not turn on'

I wake up a 4:50 am and head straight to the gym. I do this 3-4 times a week. I workout for an hour. Nothing crazy just a normal workout for a 40 something year old guy that sits at a desk all day. I don’t drink anything with caffeine and I don’t look at computers or phones an hour before I go to bed. By the end of the day I am exhausted. I’m in bed and asleep before 10pm.

Went to the white noise machine a year or so ago ... before that the "heavy breathing" (aka controlled snore) that either my wife or me (whoever fell asleep first) was going to be a going to sleep killer. Of course as we men continue to age the big nemesis is undoubtedly the urge to have to get up and shake the big willy. Twice a night is now common, an occasional three times has reared it's ugly head (pun, if you will). Only once is bliss! GOOD LUCK on your sleeping woes. One final thought, turn the thermostat down low. A cool room with blankets pulled up always seems to yield better sleep for me than having to kick off the covers. That may however create a dilemma for your sidekick Johnny?

Just saw an ad last night on the tube for a new sleep medication.

QUIVIVIQ.

I swear to God; that's its name, Doc! It finally dawned on me all these new medications sound just like the passwords on my computer. Shee-itt! Now I gotta check to see if some hot-shot med marketer broke into my computer. I guess I better change 'em again. Oh, misery.

You could be stuck on West Coast time, with backup nightmares of deeply difficult golf courses, lol. Suggestions; do something strenuous for a few hours before dusk. Walk 9 when it gets warmer. Or better, walk 18. That might knock ya out. A tired body sleeps well. Hate to say it, but old age and good sleep patterns are enemies.

New Peacock show just discovered by me is great; "Mrs. Davis". Wacky, uplifting, and outside the box, all at once. Good fun. I love off-the-wall stuff. Anybody else seen it?

I’ll put that show on my list. Currently watching The Diplomat on Netflix. It’s a great show if you like to see what happens when career analysts and spies get together or not get together to curtail the urges of idiots. In this case, the fictional US President and British Prime Minister. I could be wrong but it has to be the first drama where a former cast member of Laverne and Shirley plays the President.
