Last night's game was a bust...was looking forward to something, anything, from the Reds. Guess they had too much time off..it seemed like forever, but was only 5 days I guess...just to see that. I hope we don't have a rainout today as they need to recoop the fans. You & Me my Grateful Dead favorite.

Was at the beginning of my Friday evening ritual of reading The NY Times, puffing on a cigar and sipping a beer when I took a break to read TML. Since Garcia Does Dylan was my soundtrack for the evening I couldn’t resist the invitation to respond to the question of whether I am a Deadhead. Probably don’t qualify. Saw them live twice. Perhaps similar to Jerome Powell who said he’s been an admirer for more than 50 years. American Beauty is my favorite along with Europe ‘72. Dead and Company doesn’t do much for me though even though John Mayer is an incredible guitarist. Probably still listen to The Grateful Dead more than anything else.

Reds may not make the postseason, but this team appears to have too much heart to completely flame out, woeful lack of starting pitching notwithstanding.

Can’t say I am a certified Deadhead, but I remember where I was when I heard Garcia had died - drinking a beer after work in a liquor store on Newburg in the Ville. They did an all day show at RFK Stadium back in 70’s with the Allmans where I saw things never repeated elsewhere. My lips are sealed on that.

They were the most unique version of a supergroup of all time. My favorite tune? The Eleven (live in SF). Think I’ll put that on…

Reds. If it were just a couple or 3 guys making the magic, I'd say we're dreaming when it comes to October baseball. But it's not. Can they ALL go belly up in the heat of a pennant race? Well, possibly, but I really doubt it. I love the fact that Joey is back and contributing. Not just on the field, but in the dugout and clubhouse. He seems to relish the role and embraced his senior perspective. We may not win the division, but I absolutely believe they'll fight tooth and nail to the very end, starting tonight. And I'll be there for the first time in 2 years. Florida's great, but man, it kills me to be so far away.

Dead. Casual fan. I like and respect them, but that's it. Now, Bruce is a different story!

I started out as a heavy metal/hard rock musician many moons ago (drums). My musical taste spans the spectrum, though. I'm just as comfortable listening to Slayer as I am to Pet Sounds, Beethoven, or OutKast etc.

I appreciate what the Dead stand for and think there is great messaging in the lyrics, but I just can't get into it. I like a couple songs, and I really made an honest effort to try and "get it". But, it was to no avail. That said, I'm not one of the douchebags who makes fun of other people for enjoying something. Life is hard enough. If the Dead, Phish or Rush or Taylor Swift really brightens your day, then the songs achieved their purpose. Who would I be to try and ruin someone's good time?

The next 20 days are a gauntlet for the local 9. I'll be at the yard tonight. Hoping to see Ashcraft continue to right the ship, and I can't wait to see this team in person. First game of the season for Johnny Emptymywallet and it should be a playoff atmosphere.

Go Reds!

I'm partial to Althea. And a lot of other Dead songs I don't know the names of. I only got on board in the last couple years.

Their XM channel broadcast the Dead & Co show from Cornell a few months ago. They were on point and it made for my most interesting night walk of the year.

The Reds have the best ASS? Be still, my forever-12-year-old brain.

When I was in HS, I had some older, stoner co-workers who were Deadheads, so I was familiar with some of their work, but certainly not deep into it. Spring quarter senior year at Ohio State (1991) they played Buckeye Lake a little east of Columbus out I-70. This was the week between the end of finals and graduation. As the outgoing Entertainment editor of the Lantern with nothing else to do, I assigned myself to photograph the show (and grabbed a second credential for my roommate to "write"). It was a festival show with the Violent Femmes (?!?!) scheduled to open at 3 and the Dead to take the stage about 5:30. We went out early, traipsed through the open fields, talked with and took pictures of a bunch of tie-dyed hippies, threw frisbees and hacky-sacked, observed the grilled cheese trade and tried - unsuccessfully - to imagine our parents/their friends at our age actually enjoying this monumental weirdness. But the music itself turned out to be great. With a photo pass, I was elbows on the rail in front of the stage (at least for the first half hour). Bruce Hornsby - who was huge at the time - sat in on keys with the Dead. Jerry and Bob traded licks with evident joy. They closed with Knockin' on Heaven's Door, which was enjoying a resurgence thanks to the GnR version on the Days of Thunder soundtrack the previous year. Glad I got to see them.

Found a setlist online if anyone is interested...

I think one of the really interesting things about this season for the Reds. The debate over the years as to whether Cincinnati remains a baseball town. The answer over the past month or so has become loud and clear. Absolutely. BTW, this isn't a knock on The Bengals or FC Cincinnati. I'm glad to see success all around.

Will be interesting to see how Krall handles the next few weeks. In my mind we've got sufficient position player prospect assets - CE-C, Arroyo, Rece Hinds (?) - to pry away a Bieber or the likes for the stretch run. And really, with the current Redlegs so young, why hang onto said assets? Will Arroyo be better than McLain? Will Encarnacion-Strand exceed Steer? I don't know the answer but we'll see if Krall is as good as we think he is in the next few weeks because we do all know one thing, the Reds need pitching!

That Capt. Obvious observation aside, maybe we can sneak by for a few more weeks with what we've got and not have to make a move? And then roll the dice and see if Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft and Abbott can become/remain "solid average" (in the vernacular of the industry). If so, then maybe the offense can keep scoring enough to squeak by and Diaz's arm can stay intact from near daily use and ... that's a lot of "if's".

That's what makes it fun - the unknown. Sports remain unpredictable, which keeps me tuning in. But whatever the outcome I sincerely thank this current bunch of Reds for achieving that elusive trait we've been missing these past years - relevance.

Have seen the Dead several times as a more-than-casual fan; my advice to anyone was always to catch them outdoor versus indoor. Hygiene was not a priority for their fan base.

And why would you throw Rush into that pool of weird fan bases???? Is it because of your proximity to said weird fan base? :)

Excited as hell for the games this weekend! The energy this town has had for the last 45 days is awesome! Let's hope they can continue to defy the odds and Mr. Krall finds a reasonable deal for a pitcher or two.

Wow.

I like the Dead, but I’m odd in that I prefer a couple of their early studio albums more than their live albums.

My favorites song of theirs is also “Box of Rain,” so great choice. That’s not what I expected.

Led by a 20-something Jim Tarbell, the Hyde Park-Mt. Lookout Teen Center opened on Erie Avenue a block east of Hyde Park Sqaure in June 1968 in an abandoned church. The sanctuary became a concert venue. On Opening Night, Vanilla Fudge played. Almost forgotten now, they had two Billboard Top Ten singles hits and a Top Ten studio album in 1967 and 1968. Over Thanksgiving weekend in 1968, the teen center hosted the Grateful Dead, a fond memory for those of us who grew up in the neighborhood at the time. Unfortunately, the teen center closed with five years, but Tarbell went on to bigger and better things.

There is nothing "weird" about Rush fan loyalty. It's because they were f'ing awesome for 41 years. This ends today's music lesson. You are welcome. ;-)

Not a Dead Head, but a Dead fan.

Saw the Grateful Dead probably 15 times before Jerry died, traveling just around OH/KY/IN.

I have seen Dead & Co every time they came to Cincy, but it's just not the same.

I do love the vibe from the crowd for Dead & Co, but Bob Weir just isn't Jerry.

I do like Mayer, as he is an amazing guitar player.

I never stopped rooting for the Reds, but since Bally left YouTube TV (and MLB Network too), my fandom was not as deep.

I just don't understand how MLB can't figure out how people can access their home teams' games.

Makes no sense.

Go Fightin' EDLC's!

17 days...How about 7 weeks..? Outside of 9 games with Cubs/Nats/Pirates, the schedule is brutal through the end of August, then it eases once we get to September. If Bell, Krall, & Co. can pull the right strings to get this club to play .500 ball over the next 7 weeks, it'll be darn near miraculous. But IF they could somehow pull that off....??? We very well may have October baseball again in the Queen City. Who'd a thunk it in April?
