Love TML and glad it is back. I am 69 and retired for 3 years. I can relate to everything you said about retirement. Also for the newbies, The Club = Cincinnati Reds.
Longtime reader. I've always felt a connection. Perhaps an unreconciled bromance. Paul not only gets sports, but he gets life. He's a critical thinker. I too recently retired and while I think I should be doing more, I haven't really felt the urgency or motivation. Glad to see Paul is still writing. I'll take whatever I can get.
One of the benefits of aging and retirement is the absence of filters. Case in point – my presumptuousness. Since you didn’t think out what you wanted to be BEFORE you retired, it would be easy to conclude you were running away from something rather than toward something else. Trying to figure out what to do is not the point unless it just makes for good copy. (Yikes! There goes another filter.) Happiness is your mission. Celebrate the absence of the hard deadline. Enjoy it. Quit analyzing.
New guy. Always wanted to be a Mobster. Not a bad mobster, though. Never wanted to rub someone out. Maybe rub their face in the mud, but that's it. Ok, maybe not even that. Are there nice mobsters? I digress. Right there with you on 45. As far as Joe and his standing amongst the elite, I'll defer to later in the season. His appendix blew up, he didn't take a snap in preseason, and his line is still trying to get on a first name basis. But for a horrible snap at the ' should have been ' end of the game, he still takes them on a winning drive. But. Josh Allen looks GOOD.
Doc, I added you to my list of people that cause me a great deal of undue stress. I get wigged out thinking about what will happen when my doctor, my barber, my dentist, my contractor, my landscaper, and, now, my writer eventually decide to retire for good. What am I supposed to do? If I had a psychiatrist, I’d talk to him about it but he dropped me as a patient several years ago because he said my thoughts were screwing HIM up. This yo-yo writer ride? I read old TML’s for 6 weeks after you left The E. I’m thrilled you are back. Anyone know a good landscaper? I’m worried the grass needs cut.
Ha ha on the Tune of the Day. I *might* have posted on the old page that I use it as a theme to describe my golf game and, -ahem, other endeavors. Quoted it just today on a work-related service project.
You can’t quote our man Robert Earl Keen then choose a toby keith song. Oil and water, Tyson-Holyfield, trump and the truth. Some things just don’t go together. REK wrote a troll song about tk ripping him off. “The road goes on and on”! Glad you are back!
You have to love the symmetry of your you first Job being at Congressional CC and perhaps your last at Hickory Woods. Might sound like reverse progress to those not aware of your "other" career. But I'm guessing you prefer the clientele at the Weeds :)
I never feel great about rooting against guys like Herbert just because they stand in the way our Guy. But I'll be doing just that to Herbert tonight. As of this moment, I'd rate him 1 space above JB. I'm hoping this week's results put Joe back in the 3 spot.
For lazy mobsters such as myself, link(s) to Off The Bench would be appreciated! Suggestion box entry: Since the days of local radio are gone a shout out section to upcoming concerts/shows of interest would be a nice addition to the virtual bar to compliment the music suggestions, etc.
One of the better things in my retirement is that you’ve, sorta, come out of retirement. I’ll be referring TML to my non-Enquirer reading friends. And one omission: The Club. May it return to relevance some day.
A "moderate" independent...? Are there "extreme" independents? I guess...maybe..? I'd have to think more about that...
Anyone putting Murray in top 5 needs their head examined. Zona is headed for 7-10 this year, just watch. Read the new Jim Thorpe book by David Maraniss... maybe it's one of the 6 you've started?
An extreme independent is a secret straight ticket democrat who wants to appear objective and thoughtful at dinner parties. :)
Most of us independents are more socially liberal than conservative and we wield our ballot like a policeman’s baton when one of a few issues important to us appears to be threatened.
Most everyone would agree on Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. I think Justin Herbert would be third. If Burrow doesn't go down his rookie year, he would have set all the records that Herbert set and probably would have ended up rookie of the year. After Herbert, I put Aaron Rodgers, as long as he continues as he has in the past. That 5th spot could go several ways. I would put Joe Burrow in the conversation for the 5th spot, along with Lamar Jackson.

Ahhh…TML. Bless you and thank you Mr. Daugherty.

Everyday is Saturday Paul! We stay busy in retirement! New granddaughter and helping out keeps us happy!😍
Youse for the East Coast guy
You all for the Southern gal
Still waiting for you to write about the legendary Pat Summit!

Great take on retirement. I think your motto should be “ I’ve got nowhere to be and all day to get there”. Do you have any more books planned?

I don't go to dinner parties.
I live in Phx and Murray is definitely not top 5, barely top 10 and even that is debatable
Fair point. I was trying to say I don't lose my balance while leaning left. Thorpe is not among the 6. Probably should be.
