I had a brother in law in the minors and moving up. He was a catcher. Had a shoulder injury on his throwing arm. Young and dumb, he "took one for the team" and came back too early. Career ending surgery in the off season. His doctor's had recommended he stay out another 4 weeks when he "took one for the team." Lamar's legs are part of his money-maker.
If you want the best image quality and to enlarge, mostly make sure you have the latest and greatest phone. If it’s iPhone, make sure you’re using the newer Pro’s and this will allow you to properly enlarge the image without losing sharpness. My wife is a photographer and we typically keep the newest iPhone pro in her hands so she can work her magic.
The Ravens are dead last in the NFL when it comes to their pay to wide receivers, that's all you need to know about their commitment to Lamar, this in his walking year. Nothing like putting your entire offense on one players' shoulders.
Running QBs don't last long in the NFL. They're like shooting stars. While they're there, they're brilliant. But so short lived. Sooner or later, injuries get them all. They come in the league thinking they're invincible. 5-6 years later, they're reduced to mere mortals, close to retirement. But when you think back over some of the great ones-Cunningham, Vick, Jackson, KStewart, etc, man, were they ever fun to watch in those early years. Shooting stars, man, shooting stars.
Keep up the good work Doc - Love TML and was dismayed when you retired - then 2.0 ! As for Lamar - how many times do we have to see “The Greatest QB to ever Live” ( the ones that run a lot and pass on the run) only to see them get hurt, a lot! Why has Tom B lasted so long - and Manning and Burrow - Pocket Passer! Bengals stop Dobbins - thanks to Reader) and win by two touchdowns!
My step father played third string back in the day with the Chicago Bears. When he was in his 60's he could barely walk with two bad knees...and he lost the hearing in one ear due to a hit. And that was just a short stint on third string. IMO these guys can retire after one year on their salaries...stop while you're ahead rather than literally losing your mind.
Let me just say, Turf Toe is extremely painful. I had it by just cleaning the bath tub one day and jumping in to reach the other side barefoot. I hit the big toe and it swelled up that night. Next day off to doc. Turf Toe he called it. It was when A.J. Green had it, so now I could appreciate why he couldn't play. People laugh about digit injuries...they are not funny. I had to get shots every couple of weeks for a while just so I could walk w/o extreme pain. Shots were almost as bad as the initial pain. It took a few months to heal.
Listen to writer Larry McMurtry’s son, James McMurtry. What took his dad several chapters to do, James paints a visual in one song. Great stuff. Choctaw Bingo is a good example. Hurricane Party is another; “I don’t want another drink, I only want that last one again.” Superb writing across the board including his political songs which I may or may not agree with.
Love reading TML and you're right on the nose again today. Re. XU B-ball and the LJ situation. I've so far shared your Substack incarnation with 3 of my friends and I'll continue to sing your praises.
As to your photo question, here's a rule of thumb: MP = IN, or megapixels = inches. The iphone as well as most digital cameras, take 12MP pictures so prints are sharpest no larger than 12”. A square 12×12 or a rectangle 12×16. It works out to about 300 pixels per square inch of image. Prints will blur at larger dimensions. P.S. That's a pretty shot of looking Glass Rock.
The longer you can make your opponent prepare to face one of three (!) different quarterbacks, the better. It’s an advantage. I believe his not playing is >90% due to his physical condition, not due to the contract situation.
Baltimore is too smart to give Lamar a big, guaranteed contract. Their philosophy is to build a very deep roster, and a huge QB contract hamstrings you there. I see them picking up a decent starter (Derek Carr?) in the off-season and trading Lamar for a haul of picks.
Great column, would have been nice to reference the YardBird's version of your song of the day, it had the late great Jeff Beck on guitar, and yes that is Jimmy Page playing with him.
He's better than "can somewhat throw". People can argue his overall value but I disagree with the opinion that he's a better RB than QB. His passing stats are pretty good. I'd argue possibly top ten.
Doc, iPhone pics can be enlarged to as much as 40 inches wide depending on the model of phone you have. I have enlarged a few pics and the best ones were taken w/o using the zoom feature. Zooming in makes it difficult to get a good pic of anything. Stating the obvious, you need to start with a very, very fine and clear pic or the enlarged version will be cloudy and a waste of money. There are apps out there to vastly improve your pics but I haven’t been that motivated to try them. The one thing you can’t do is what Gilbert Gnarley asked someone on the phone; ”I’d like to remove a tree in my picture so I can see my dog,The Amazing Krepso, who was hiding behind it.”

Another outstanding column, Doc!
Good one, Phil, but Doc actually did call is "Turf Toe,..same as the football players get." But, I'll take Tub Toe...

Fun read. Can’t argue with Aerosmith, but I am more of an Americana guy...focused on lyrics.

I, too, am surprised Doc did not mention Jeff Beck's passing today. Truly, a top-five guitarist from the rock era.
You don't pay a RB who can somewhat throw QB 1 type money. Lamar is a RB.
