And, by the way, Happy Birthday 🎉

Fogelberg comes to mind twice a year ... this New Years Eve classic and Derby Day (and his Run for the Roses). Another musical talent taken away from us way too soon.

Enjoying TML 2.0 in my mailbox.

No clue who will win Monday night, but will be watching.

Everybody and his neighbor is in a bowl game this year. The lead up to UK / Iowa is all about who is sitting it out/injured/in the transfer portal. "When the going gets weird the weird turn pro." The immortal words of Hunter S. Thompson.

Be smart and safe NYE if you are out and about. Will watch the ball drop on tv here as usual. Black-eyed peas (from frozen) will be cooked with appropriate seasoning on New Year's Day. Might still pick up some collard greens tomorrow. We have ham that needs to be eaten before we freeze a lot.

May 2023 be a good one for us all.

Same Auld Lang Syne- not “Christmas Shoes” bad, but in the same zip code.

I pick the Bengal's to win. Yes, Josh does get rattled and sometimes pushes too hard. He tends to come along at the end and take it into the endzone himself like a young bull. But I say Joe will stay cool and pull this one off just fine. He always seems to find a way and I trust he will continue to do so. When he wins, it will be through the rain. Happy Birthday & Happy New Year!

Yesterday’s opine on Joe Buck reminded me of a similar TML thread on Jim Nantz, who I’ve thought of as “the Fogleberg of sports” more than once, so ironic music choice today. I respect the technical chops of both, but both Twins of Schmaltz, imo.

From the view in western NY...the Bills will only win if they can generate a decent pass rush and their defensive backs play their best games. Josh vs. Joe will be pretty equal in performance in my opinion. Bills get win 30-28 on last minute TD drive.

I never knew Frank Abell. But I always enjoyed his comments. I hope he - or at least his family - knows that his passing put a hole in the day of many who he never met in person. Thanks for passing it along.

I like the Bengals this week at home and firing on all cylinders. Obviously they need to stay on the plus side of the turnover battle. I also think they should try to establish an early ball control type offense. Much like the Buccaneers did against them in the first half a few weeks ago. Limit Allen's snaps as much as you can...he can't score without the ball! I also have faith that the defense will slow him down. They've proven time and time again that they can't be dominated. They bend but rarely break. Bengals win this one. I like your score prediction in reverse...Bengals 27, Bills 23.

MLB makes me sad, as do the Reds. I think the Reds will compete again, and not too far into the future. Everyone is low on them after last year's debacle. I hated to see the roster broken down the way it was but in hindsight those moves don't look awful. And they acquired a lot of potential talent this year. Not all those guys will make the majors but some will. This year probably won't be great. I think they hit the over on the current O/U of 65.5, though. And I think in 2024 we see the team start to take shape. In the markets like ours winners aren't built over night.

Harbaugh to the Colts is a rumor or maybe a wish. He’s in their Ring of Honor, affectionately known as “Captain Comeback”. He’s built the program back to a very high standard at UM. But I’m with ya Doc, NFW I choose college over pro if equal options exist.

College football is a complete disaster and it takes a special person to thrive in the current environment. Over the past decade or so, the majority of the successful college coaches have been older/Type-A personalities who have full command of the program (Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh, etc.). Howeveuh, the NFL has seen a trend to younger "player" coaches who aren't tyrants and cater to the superstars on their respective rosters (LaFleur, McVay, Shannahan, Taylor, etc.) Bill Belicheck is starting to look more and more like a dinosaur in the NFL. My hunch is that college football will start to trend in this direction with the NIL and the transfer portal - players seem to hold more cards than the good old days. Harbaugh is definitely a part of the old school style coaching contingent that is becoming obsolete in the NFL. You have to wonder if that will factor into his decision about making the jump.

Baseball is dying a slow death. The jerk in the commissioner's chair just doesn't know it, yet. The economics of it are killing it. Everybody's making money right now, so they don't care. One day, they will. It'll be too late. Baseball will be hockey one day. It'll be niche. I hate to say that because baseball has always been my favorite sport, to play, to watch, to listen to. The Reds were my first favorite team, and they still are. In snapshots of my mind, I remember being told by my 13-year-old brother to shout at Pete. "Hey Pete! Hi, Pete! Yay, Pete". I was 4.

RIP, Frank. That's sad news.

Dan Fogelberg is underrated. Very good songwriter; wistful and poignant. Very listenable, too. He's pigeonholed as a soft rocker, but he was great. Passed away much too young, as well. Who knew he and Joe Walsh were close friends? Here is the last new Eagles studio cut, post Glenn Frey-death. A Joe Walsh-sang "Part of The Plan". Good not great.

Fogelberg may have lacked the edge that some of his contemporaries wrote with. (And I suppose some of his lyrics would have displeased a journalism professor). But all these years later, his songs can summon old feelings as acutely as a fragrance might. He certainly deserves credit for that.
