Coaches and players so much more accessible to the media in today's NFL. Much differemt than the days you describe when secrecy was an obsession among coaches. Chuck Noll instructed his staff and players to treat the media like mushrooms. Keep them in the dark and feed them shite when necessary.

Nice read Paul - makes one pause to reflect. Spain thing is ridiculous.

As far as Rubiales' situation, did anyone check his pockets for blue pills? Maybe he can get off on a drug overdose charge, instead....

BTW, does anyone notice that spell check isn't giving you the correct spelling of your questionable words these days? I click on my erroneous spelling and it brings up entirely different words than the "obvious" one I was trying to spell. I used to win Bunny Certificates in grade school with my great spelling skills. What's up with technologie thesde dais?

I get misty eyed just thinking about that vignette of Amy and Gary playing the par 3 in Phoenix. Was wonderful to see her "drink it all in" and still be herself...the lights were definitely not too bright! And Gary treated her like a normal person which is a lesson in and of itself. Bravo!

The Reds need OF depth and rosters about to expand. I have no doubt they tried to claim those pitchers as well, but Cleveland was 12th in priority vs the Reds at 15th. Kinda surprised the pitchers even made it that far tbh.

I share your concern about the game in Cleveland. The Browns are always a challenge and the Bengals starters will need some time to become game ready. I believe the decision to not play starters at all during preseason will cost the team 1-2 losses per year in the first few games.

I was disappointed to not see James Williams III's name on the practice squad. He was a beast in preseason and has a motor like Ossai.

Sending a dude out with a roll of quarters is the coachiest coach act ever. I love the weirdness.

I'm not particularly chasing the story, but because I follow soccer closely I've been exposed to the Rubiales news and here's what I've been able to gather:

+ Spain's national women's team and their football federation have been at odds for a few years now and it does play a part in where things are today.

+ One-time national team players accused the manager of being in inept, over his head, a product of nepotism and creating an unstable team environment. They wanted to see some change.

+ Those players didn't see change and they refused to play for Spain. The manager remained (with the backing of the federation). The manager wanted only players he felt would give 100%.

+ New players joined. New players played for the manager (but didn't necessarily warm to him... they frequently ignored him, aside from training and game time situations). New players remarkably won the World Cup while playing under a manager (and maybe a federation) they didn't care for much.

+ Rubiales (head of Spanish Football Federation) plants a kiss on a player at the medal ceremony that at a minimum can be described as totally weird and inappropriate.

As you rightly point out, the kiss was not a high crime per se, but the world of soccer (unfortunately) is rife with influential people who abuse their power in all sorts of ways. Rubiales is another character in this sad reality. People who care about the sport are very much fed up and expect better. And as this game continues to grow (it's projected to get even bigger) folks want the nip these things in the bud as a precedent for the future. Most people in Spain are embarrassed by this episode and want to see it put right because they are one of the best footballing nations in the world and don't want the image of a nation who merely sweeps systemic problems under the rug (the women's manager for 27-years prior to this one also treated his players as subjects rather than human beings).

Just seeing the name George Welsh mentioned in TML is enough to bring a joyful tear to this UVA grad’s eyes. Would you believe Virginia almost won the mythical national championship in football once? Given the mediocrity of UVA football ever since they showed George the retirement door still boils the blood. Wahoo Wah!…

Well I guess it’s time to get out my John Lee Hooker CDs. John Lee and Muddy Waters are probably my two favorite old blues guys.

Even though he's a pile of human excrement, Deshaun Watson has a lot of talent. And the Browns did PASTE the Bengals on Halloween night last year. I agree, the Bengals could very well drop game 1.

Is Rubiales a star? I ask because my president tells me that stars are allowed to do whatever they want. They can grab em by the whatever. This is clearly a witch hunt, the likes of which have never been seen, perpetrated by thugs, really despicable human beings. People are saying it, and I thought,

'wow, that's a lot of people saying it.'

As far as coachspeak, I take it with a grain of salt.

Yes, Cleveland is better. So are we. Suit up!

A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is definitely a sigh.

J. L. Hooker! Enough said.

Giolito. Maybe not a west coast guy?

So who has the era of 6.89 in six starts for the Angels? lol

Aren't football teams required to send in medical reports to the league offices each week, so they can be reported to the media? And hasn't someone been fined or something like that for being less than honest in the reports they sent to the league?

Yeah, so we all get you are befuddled by all things soccer, Doc, but I suspect what the world community as a whole had a problem with was when the individual was presented with the opportunity to acknowledge the fault in his actions, he presented his “apology” alongside a LIE in order to justify the act he as “apologizing” for. And has since entrenched himself. That doesn’t see all that “strange.”
