Premier League matches can be watched live on Peacock Premium ($5.99 a month), if not on NBC or USA. If you like rugby, NFL, golf, et al., PP is the way to go!
I went last night with my 8 year old who knows far more about soccer than I. Messi did what we would call cherry picking or loafing in hoops - he stood at mid field, waited for something to happen, moved very little, and played no Defense.
That said, he had an amazing assist to tie the game and made his kick in OT (so he’s better than Rapinoe). But overall, he didn’t look like the Michael Jordan of soccer.
Sweet Virginia!! A top 2 Stones favorite for me, along with Gimme Shelter from Let it Bleed.
Somebody else feels the same way too. At the end of the movie “Knives Out”, they finish with Sweet Virginia and play it during the credits. It could’ve been my mood at the time, but that felt like artistic perfection. It helped make a good movie even better. The Stones at their bawdy best IMO.
My Desert Island Tune List begins with Gimme Shelter, IMO the best rock song ever made. Menacing, ace guitar break, Merry Clayton's switch-blade vocal putting a bow on it all.
I completely agree. Keith talked about how that song came about in his book “LIFE”. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. The guy is an amazing person. Show much more to him than his rock ‘n’ roll persona.
One of his avocations is history and he has a big library at home. I like the story of him growing up going to school amongst all the post World War II rubble and contending with all the adolescent bullies.
For years my Cincy sensibility about Pete NOT being in the Hall seemed righteous. Did he deserve to be there because of his achievements on the field? Oh, hell yes. There was never a question. But, I always understood why he wasn't going to be.
Now, when every single TV commercial break touts a gambling app that loves to laud its IN-GAME betting?! Uhhh....
I know that is an apples to oranges comparison, but seriously, let Rose in. He's paid his dues to the baseball powers-that-be and should be allowed in Cooperstown before he passes into the Field of Dreams corn with Shoeless Joe, et. al.
I actually would have loved to watch FCC last night as the center of my Reds double-header sandwich. Once you understand it, soccer IS exciting. More so in person, but last night would have been fun to witness in any capacity.
We'll see where the Reds are after Labor Day. I am thinking we may have to sneak down to the ol' ballpark that Sunday, fireworks crowds be dammed. Our last in-person game was the first City Connect night way back in the spring. Gotta see this team before the season ends, whether they are in the postseason or not. It has truly been an engaging and at times truly electric season.
Your apples to oranges argument is logical until you question the change in public sentiment due to time. The hypocrisy of MLB on this is becoming legend. Gambling is so endemic to the present in so many ways, MLB has no argument to stand on anymore.
I don’t disagree with your assessment whatsoever, tho players still get penalized for gambling on their own teams or the game in general. But, your point stands.
Pete won’t be in the Hall. MLB commissioners will never allow it. Ken Anderson deserves to be in the NFL hall, but he’s overlooked each time in favor of flashy, big market players. Ask Joe Montana if Anderson belongs.
Not a soccer guy, but glad I watched most of last night's game (can't call it a match, not being a soccer guy and all). Too bad such an electric contest came down to a skill drill - one of the things I truly detest about soccer - and doubly too bad it was the hometown kid who got stuffed on the last PK, but man... what a charged atmosphere. The announcer made Sadak seem heavily medicated by comparison, but even that was tolerable. (And Sadak happily had plenty to holler about last night, too.) Wouldn't have paid the reported 5x StubHub prices, but definitely an entertaining way to spend the time between the day and night ends of the Reds doubleheader.
"new" phone thing...? Uhh Doc, the Baseball Grid has been going on for 4+ months. But yeah, it's pretty great. I do better with the statistical boxes. Usually Saturday grids are mostly stats, they're the most fun. The fun part is trying to achieve the lowest possible score with oddball benchwarmers, relievers, etc.
Several years ago when reports circulated of Rose & an underage girl, it quietly gave MLB and its gatekeepers a final insurmountable wall to defend against the pro-Rose HOF crowd. Yeah, we all know Pete gambled and lied. That can be forgiven. But if you add on some sort of icky sexual stuff...? Even if it's just whispers? Well then... That's going to be a bridge too far for Pete's readmittance to the game.
IIRC, it was mlb’s lawyer John Dowd (a fairly soulless ghoul who later worked for another one) who alleged something about Pete and underage girl(s). The Rose camp tried to bring a defamation suit and when the case went to Discovery the rumors were confirmed. Checkmate, as they say. There was momentum for his reinstatement at that time, and he might’ve gotten it had Dowd not spoken out then.
I'm with ya... put him in, warts and all. His stuff's already there, and his record will likely never be broken. The Hall is about one's ability to play and/or contributions to the game of baseball, not of individual morality.
I’m not sure I understand these mid season tournaments in soccer. Is this a bigger deal than the MLS postseason? The game was great and Messi lived up to the hype .
1) MLS Cup - the traditional "playoff" championship (more for us Americans as they don't do this in Europe)
2) Supporters Shield - best regular season record (most points) and similar to how Europe decides its league champions.
3) US Open Cup - goes through most of the season and allows lower division teams the chance to play against MLS teams, with a trophy awarded at the end. FCCs performance early on was a big reason why they got into MLS.
4) Leagues Cup - brand new mid season tournament between MLS and Liga MX with a trophy awarded.
There's also champions league and club world cup, but those above are the 4 trophies everyone competes for each year - listed in order of "prestige" IMO. Since we don't have any trophies, the US Open Cup would have been historic, but I much rather win the Cup or Shield.
FCC is truly a Cincinnati team, and lost in a most Cincinnati sports fashion - up 2-0 with 20 minutes to go only to have our hearts broken in the last 30 seconds of stoppage time, to tie it up again in extra time, only to lose on penalties. Helluva game and proud of how they played! Those of us in the Bailey tried to will them to victory, but alas Messi is inevitable.
I couldnt agree more regarding the MLS TV "deal". I finally starting paying attention to FCC games last year, and was actually looking forward to following them more closely this year. Then the MLS games were shuttled off to Apple+ and that was that. Aside from a few games a year that are part of the package's weekly free offering it's pretty much just the various Cup games, unless you want to pay. And I'm not THAT into soccer. Seems a short-sighted decision by the MLS suits, if growing the game(and league) is the goal.
I am not sure where you thought you were going to follow them. Star 64? I think you would have been limited to whatever games ESPN chose to carry.
ESPN had the rights but only offered $10 million per year to the league. Apple TV is paying $25 million/year and every MLS game is available. Last night was not an official MLS game so it was on the weird CBS channel which Star 64 broadcast locally.
I think I pay $13/month for the MLS package and $7/month for Apple TV access. I can watch from anywhere.
Re growing the game and viewership, ESPN reportedly had 343,000 viewers per game across all of its platforms. Still a niche TV viewing sport.
I believe it's only like $80 for the whole year, though. I don't watch MLS, but to me that's a pretty good deal to be able to watch your team on any device anywhere. If MLB.TV was that cheap and didn't have blackout rules, I'd immediately cancel cable.
I sure hope we don't have an Ohtani Curse similar to the Bo Jackson Curse that we finally exorcized.
I know next to nothing about soccer, but thoroughly enjoyed today's TML. Loved the opening, classic Doc.
Postscript: Watched the Cinci-Miami match last night live on PP (in Spanish).

Hard to argue re Pete. And yet, at its essence, any Hall is a museum. If you don't want to give him a plaque, take all of his stuff out of the museum.
I'm with ya... put him in, warts and all. His stuff's already there, and his record will likely never be broken. The Hall is about one's ability to play and/or contributions to the game of baseball, not of individual morality.
Only 4 months?
Stones definitely had a great run from ‘68-‘72.

When are Cincinnati sports fans' hearts not broken? 33 years and counting.
