I had the opportunity to play Sawgrass with my father. I donated three balls to the moat and, if memory serves, a snapped over the knee iron may still laying deep in the bush/pine straw.
Mrs. Thinwallet and I prepare playlists on Spotify and play them while traveling on long distance drives. Invariably no matter what we base the playlist on The Weight is played within 8-10 songs. We usually set the over/under at 5 or 6 and you'd be surprised how often the under wins. Hendrix, James Taylor, CSN&Y . Santana... It doesn't make a difference. It's uncanny how this song transcends all pop/rock. We always get a laugh when we hear this song. Hey wait a minute....
I can't wait for the tourney! All of the big tv's in my living room are ready to broadcast the madness. Others have to decide which game they're going to watch, my only decision is which game's audio is on.
The Band is legendary. They remind me of the coolest night I've spent on this planet. About 6 years ago a buddy was getting married. They were going budget and decided to do a joint bachelor/bachelorette party. They rented a bunch of silent disco sets, told everyone to meet at 4pm at a tiny remote spot in the desert only accessible by offroading for about 15 miles. Absolute middle of nowhere. Some friends/artists came out with generators and set up a laser show. Every star in the sky made an appearance that night. We all put on our silent disco sets and danced to a full Phish concert. When that was over we cooked a big dinner, had many drinks, and then we got dressed up in absurd manners, and silent discoed every second of the Last Waltz deep into the night. Feet hurt from dancing, we slept in tents (some on the desert sand), woke up, made some coffee, someone made a bunch of eggs and bacon, and drove out of there and back to our lives. Magic, with a big assist from molly.
Maybe this makes me a jerk, but I'm not intimidated by 132 yard wedge shots. My concern would be leaving a makable birdie, not finding the green. Sorry. I have a game.
I'm looking at you for leading a local TML manufactured outrage insurrection mob featuring pitchforks & torches insisting Doc appoint you in charge of setting up the 1st Annual TML Lounge Lizards NCAA bracket contest, on any number of bracket selection contest hosting sites ... chop chop
Our representative from the Sports entertainment industrial complex talkin' that golf trash all of the sudden ... who also approves of my premise of psychedelics being at the roots of current artistic expressions
Funny piece today, Doc. The show was pretty sucky, wasn't it? UC got screwed by the committee. They shoulda made the tourney. Can't believe I'm the only one who feels that way. I mean. c'mon. They gotta be better than Howard Metzenbaum and Farewell-AngieDickenson. They even gave NKU a scare in the 1st half during the season. And give Clark credit; "Froghorns" is just a quicker way to say "Horned Frogs". He was referencing TCU, not Texas, at the time. Bravo for your brevity, Clark. Next time I'm hopin' he sez "the Horney Frogs".
Back in the day, when my 9 and PW were deadlier than Alec Baldwin, I really wanted to play 17 at Sawgrass. I felt pretty confident I could hit that green and hold it 90% of the time. Yesterday, when the wind came up and everyone got confused, I decided watching the carnage was good enough. The diff between 12 at Augusta and 17 yesterday is that there is zero bailout on 17 and they keep that green hard as a rock. Much harder hole, imo. BTW, I do not, nor have I ever, committed or played golf. I have, however, gone golfing thousands of times and utterly enjoyed myself to the max. If youknow whatImean,Vern...... Words matter. Ask my good friend, Walt Whitman. Plays to a 2. And thusly, I'm ready to go golfing again this spring, as soon as it get warmer. Wondering if you plan on going golfing this year, Doc? It's a fun game, ya know. Very accepting of colloquialisms.
Yeah, 17 at Sawgrass looks like a bear. I'd be between clubs, naturally— either a perfectly nuked 9 or a perfectly easy 8. And who hits it perfectly right when they need to? I'd like to believe I'd hit the green more times than not, but who knows for sure until they really give it a go? But one thing I'm less sure of is my ability to hold the green— that prospect seems as fickle as an ink jet printer.
What a tune of the day ... just got goosebumps listening to that while sitting here at work. Awesome song, and awesome collaboration. Enjoyed it much more than the record version, for sure.
The Madness begins to warm up tomorrow night, and hits full boil Thursday. The Lunacy, meanwhile (at least on the part of CBS) appears to have taken place last night.
Good grief, I mean, did they not even prepare before the show?
My bracket stays pretty. Write the winners in as they win. Sometimes I forget for a while and have to play catch up.
Final Four is being played in Houston. I suspect the locals see that as a good sign for the Cougars. I had to get out a magnifying glass to read the bracket page logo for FF city. Probably should have known already but nah.
Lovely to entertain the thought of Norse as giant killers, but sacrificial lambs as usual in that 16 spot.
Xavier as a 3 seed surprised me. Seems a little high.
Agree about X. They are really good, but a 3? And NKU got almost no respect. I have a feeling Houston will come out red hot, but the Norse will still make a good showing. They always do.
I'd try to hit my five Hybred Wood onto the green as high as I could hit it. And, I'd be using a water ball, so that's my confidence level of staying on the green. Zip, even if I hit the green.
You're right. Only part of the game I watched was when someone was on 17. I didn't know half the players, or even a 10th of them actually. I miss Michelson.
Re: basketball. I'm a Purdue fan this year. Both my dad and step father were grads from Purdue, so I'm watching them for my two favorite guys that aren't here to watch them anymore.
"The Weight" is a timeless classic. It was appropriately featured in the cult classic "Easy Rider". Dumb movie with a fantastic soundtrack. That song, along with the Byrds cover of "I Wasn't Born to Follow" (written by Carol King and her husband) hooked many back in 1969 when the movie came out.
Thanks for the great bracket page. I blew it up as much as possible and printed multiple copies. I searched for too long online looking for a page precisely like the one you provided. This is the best annual sports tournament in the US, IMO. The universal appeal and fan zeal are such a blast to witness. It never gets old. My personal favorite (and hopeful) matchup would be Indiana (my school) vs. Houston in the Sweet 16. Houston coach Kelvin Sampson trashed the Indiana basketball program for years after his tenure there, with all penalties and infamy due to the recruiting violations. It took IU years to attract top talent again. I would love to see IU blow Houston off the court.
Out of those, how many (practice) brax will you fill out? The winner most likely includes 32 pts for having picked the champion + the most of the final 4, so I work those picks out first and then proceed backwards. 1st round upsets are for early bragging rights, but picking for them first skews your mindset/approach to the rest of the tournament
Good question. I will need to research some of these teams and will try your strategy as well. I printed out a couple copies for my wife as well. She went to the University of Maryland back when Lefty Driesell was coach. It’s one sporting she will watch with me. I told her when we got married back in ‘74 that IU and MD would play in a big game someday. Well, they played in the NCAA final 20+ years ago and MD kicked our butts.
So you guys debate your separate bracket picks throughout your day? My girlfriend usually picks for her work contest and she's always asking me about some matchup or the other. I will also send her to 538 for their sortable probability tool, but she doesn't use my 'download from planetary future mind noosphere via tree trance temple' meditation practice input methods, only if she can't make a final decision on any one particular game and asks for my advice
LOL. 538 has a sports page? Great suggestion, I’ll check it out.
My wife is very passive about the tournament. She’ll cheer for any ACC team, MD (was ACC back when she was in school-old habits die hard), the Cinderella teams and any cliffhanger game currently on TV.
I am more engaged. I don’t bet $$, nor do I consult Gurus, mystics or sports commentators to make my picks. The talking sports heads are like weathermen and economists--mostly wrong. I just try to enjoy the fun of it and pick out the young players that rise to the occasion and make it happen for their teams. Enjoy!!
Oh my, ESPN is who first launched 538 and Nate Silver into the general public awareness. Sports blogging was their original mission lol ... all those Steve Kornacki network segments for the NFL this season were using 538 ELO ratings statistics
The Weight and The Band’s other classic hit (Cripple Creek) have been in my “Soft Rock” favorites playlist for many a year. Too bad most members of this band fried their brains on drugs!
I would submit that 'most of the band members frying their brains on drugs' is the single most important contributing factor in the history of rock & roll ... as evidence I offer up another example of native KY buffalo trail 'shamans', fellow Bluegrass denizen Owsley Stanley III
Owsley had a visionary and technical hand in bringing all those legendary rock tracks and concert performances like The Last Waltz movie acoustics to the adoring masses. Try a wiki search for the Grateful Dead Wall of Sound

Great song, UC’s season was a disappointment, not an fun team to watch.
NIL and the NCAA’s ineptness dull March Madness... and Gumbel?? Cmon Bro.
I’m just now commenting! The email link didn’t work. I’ll try to do better tomorrow. I was busier today than Michael Irvin’s lawyer.

I would hit a PW on 17 @ Sawgrass, and would be immediately reaching into my pocket for another ball as soon as I hit.

Me and Brook Dyas vs You and Doc. Summit Hills CC. Loser wears the opposite team's political party gear. You'll look great in a Mike Pence hat.
Over Trump's dead body.
I'm hitting 8 iron on17 at Sawgrass and most likely using a confidence ball.

My strategy for 17 at Sawgrass would be simple. I'd pull my 8 iron, tee it up and have my fore caddy ready with a 60 degree wedge at the drop zone 🏌️
