Charlotte also appropriated our city nickname the Queen City.
And Big 12 wants Gonzaga but won’t take Oregon St or Washington St? I think Gonzaga is better fit for the Big East. None of this conference realignment makes sense.
Kudos to the Warren County, Mason and state politicians along with the Cincinnati captains of industry that stuck with it and got the job done. This is truly an international, world class event that draws patrons from all over the midwest to fill our hotel rooms and dine at our restaurants. The announcement by Novak and Coco was classy, and the person who recommended this method rather than a political press conference should be working for Bud Light. Loved the tune of the day.
Congrats to Cincinnati for keeping ATP. Good fit. There was a time that my daughter was able to attend and sat “close enough for Agassi to fling sweat on her.” Corporate tickets. She was way down the ladder and thrilled.
Can’t get into baseball playoffs yet.
Finishing season 2 of Lupin now that season 3 has dropped on Netflix.
Please keep all the souls in Israel and Gaza in your hearts. So much pain and grief.
I think an important factor that helped keep the tournament here is that Mason and Warren County were involved, not Cincinnati and Hamilton County politicians. I've also heard that the players and fans really enjoy having the tournament here. I agree with you that the playoffs are won by the hot hands and teams with the best performing top 3 pitchers and relievers. It seems that a lesser known player becomes hot and helps spark teams to victory. Billy Hatcher and Chris Szabo are examples for the Reds, along with Jose Rijo. Regarding Spokane, there is an Amtrak station stop there if you really want to go.
Does the venue get used regularly outside of the two week tournament? Honestly don’t know. Seems like such a nice facility to maintain with few other events.
Given that John Barret did the lion’s share of negotiations, he carved out a nice concession for his good friend called “The Collinsworth Rule”. Chris will call all finals and will only be allowed to use these nine words birthed by Gary Burbank; “Uh, he (she) hit it. Uh, he (she) hit it back.”
Non-descript is an apt description of the Texas Rangers. My son and I were riffing on that last night as they destroyed the Orioles. Non-descript location (Texas, not Dallas), meh nickname, boring logo, and dull and common uniforms. That said, they are in the LCS and have played in two WS in the past 15 years.
Count me among those who thought the WS Open was gone. What made it galling to me was it seemed that Cincy did not have a chance - if a billionaire buys a new toy, he will do what he wants with it, a century of loyal support be damned.
Wow! Nice treat. I (a non payer) get to read the full article, instead of just the trailer...on a Wednesday! Felt like I was getting away with something...sneaking in a side door left open.
Congratulations to the Queen City for holding on to a marquee sporting event! I am not any kind of tennis fan but as a long-time volunteer in local and state chambers of commerce, I am well versed in the importance of keeping your community’s visibility high in competition with other American cities.
The phrase that was famous in these business gatherings was “export your taxes” which means attracting Americans from other communities to visit and spend money that generates local tax collections without using the local dime already collected for various purposes. Whenever I’m traveling, I am enough of a nerd to check the tax rates added to hotel rooms or other expenditures just to see what the local extortion rates are. This is how these events pay off.
As for the Big 12 adding Gonzaga for the obvious reason of increasing the attractiveness of future television packages, it’s just more proof of the growing greed in the offices of academic leaders that lecture the rest of us separately on the “evils of capitalism”. Come on down to the mosh pit of competition, guys, we’ve got plenty of room for hypocrites like you.
MLB teams with the best W-L are not necessarily the best. You have to consider the competition, and even injuries play into it. Some teams in a division are lucky and catch a team when their superstar(s) are out. If it were as simple as who has the best W-L record, you could scrap the entire playoffs and just hand the crown to the team with the best W-L record.
Doc, I am a tennis player so I am happy the tournament has signed on for the next 25 years. You alluded to the fact that we outbid Charlotte to do so but having lived in NC for 12 years my guess is the “bigwigs” and execs in the largest companies in Charlotte are going to sharpen their pencils and soon will outbid us. As you have said many times, “follow the money” and I have this feeling that this deal may not be be ironclad and final.
Sounds like the ATP powers that be like it here. It does have a fabulous history. Maybe a venue from a different city gets transferred to Charlotte or maybe a whole new stop on the tour. I am unclear on how much money Beemok/Navarro are going to be sinking into the Lindner Center. It would be nice to know that, because that could be reassurring if it's significant. Breaking contracts does get expensive, what with huge lawsuits and all.
I lost track of the number of times Cincinnati was mentioned during broadcasts of the U.S. Open. Not only is the city hanging onto the tournament, but I would hope that its being right before the U.S. Open will continue. That’s why it gets all the mentions from the mouths of McEnroe and his cohort.
Hooray! It would have been a shame to lose the W-S Open! I love seeing Cincinnati win. Someone at a meeting here in CO asked me yesterday where I was born and where I grew up, and I proudly said, “Cincinnati, Ohio!”

A 1964 song title seems appropriate: "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte."
Actually, that was the title tune for one of the great horror movies of all time

Good win by the city. Surprised as well.

the REAL queen city won this one!!!
Somewhere, Paul Flory smiles.
I gotta think he was watching out for his baby from beyond.
