In January 2016 my wife and I were fortunate to have the western leg of the Reds Caravan stop by our house for a visit. While we were excited for all who came that day, we were most happy that Tom Browning was part of the crew that day. I'll always remember him sitting at our kitchen table eating pizza and Buckeyes and making everyone laugh. When he found out our big chocolate labradoodle was named Nuxie, he asked if he could kneel down in front with 'ol Nux for the group photo. Just a good humble guy, that always had time for anyone. Thanks for everything Tom, we're going to miss you!

Doc. Thank you for your thoughtful words concerning what may, if anything, come to light about Tom in the near future. Now is, indeed, the time to mourn and celebrate a man who was loved by many in this city for exactly the picture your words painted.

I believe Tom would have laughed and agreed that his fast ball wouldn’t poke through a pie crust but he also would have pointed out that, just to amuse himself, the dents he left on that pie were a perfect G clef of the first 7 chords to Hank Williams Jr.’s “A Country Boy Can Survive”.

I sincerely hope in life he realized how much Cincinnatians cared for him.

Great column remembering Tom Browning. Only met him once but he was definitely from the same category as our beloved Joe Nuxhall, Sean Casey, Chris Sabo, ECT. I give thanks every time I see your name in my email inbox Doc, thank goodness that "retired" wasn't totally retired in your case

Missed the perfect game but I remember where I was when I first heard a repeat of Marty's iconic call on WLW the next morning. It was that big of a deal. Rest in peace, Tom Browning, and thanks for all the positive memories.

Doc, pro shopping tip. You can buy printer ink on line and it is much cheaper than at Staples. The off brand stuff usually works well and you can stock up on it so do not have to rush to Staples to buy it in a hurry.

“A pickup truck before pickup trucks were cool.” Thanks for this remembrance. Browning’s loss hurts. We weren’t friends, but we all knew him. He was part of our lives.

I just want to say how happy I am that you are writing here now, Doc! I have been reading you almost my entire life and had to stop many years back when the Enquirer went to pay to read. I am so happy to read your work again!! The connection you give me to the city I grew up near is special. I’ve always bought your books and read you when I can.

RIP Mr. Browning. You were one of my childhood Reds heroes.

I'm with ya, Doc on the online shopping. My only gripe is that I find it VERY hard to be inspired by shopping only online. I actually need to get into some stores and browse to get my gift giving creative juices flowing. I just have a hard time thinking of things to get for folks and shopping online doesn't seem to do the trick for me in that aspect. But...once I have ideas, then yeah...Amazon is my best friend.

With MLB going to a pitch clock next year could the Reds honor Mr. Perfect by naming the one at GABP after him. He’d smile knowing that HE would never need one! #TBURonthe⏰

Fleetwood Mac v2 is indeed a treasure for the ages. But...the Peter Green/Bob Welsh iterations (think Bare Trees) were also a unique and very listenable sound for their time. What you say Doc?

One of my best Christmas memories is from my first years out of college and working retail at Shillito’s as a department head. A few of us took the same day off and shopped downtown among the snow flurries. Wonderful! Few shopping days ever - and assuredly will never - beat that.

Great tune by McVie. She will be missed as are Ella, Karen Carpenter, Mama Cass, & Janis Joplin. Each had their own special talent and class, never to be replaced, but easily remembered.

One of his sons works at a club I belong to and is a very down to earth nice guy. Never talks about his Dad or being the son of a famous local player. I did not grow up around here so these stories reflect how he raised his kids to be humble and have gratitude.

I met Tom at a winter caravan stop at our TV station. Tom signed autographs for everyone who asked and ate pizza while doing it! Nice guy and he truly was Mr. perfect!

True words about TB. Wish I could have met him. Everyone I know who had echoes all of your sentiments. For me, online shopping is a huge asset in terms of time if nothing else. That is not to say that I don't soak in the 'joy' of the holiday hustle & bustle. As David Foster Wallace so eloquently put it:

"If you really learn how to pay attention...It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer-hell type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down.

Not that that mystical stuff is necessarily true. The only thing that’s capital-T True is that you get to decide how you’re gonna try to see it."

Not that this doesn't take some real work, but Christmas is a great time to give it a try.

No love for today's Idaho Potato Bowl? Looks to be a real scorcher on the blue turf as SD State takes on middling MAC powerhouse Eastern Michigan.
