In my nightmares, I see Bradenton Beach evolving into Hilton Head. Most people love Hilton Head. I look at HH and see chairs and umbrellas stacked in rows, like cordwood, facing the water. I detest Hilton Head.
Up until a decade or so ago, Bradenton was a mom-n-pop place, big brother-ed by Tampa to the north and Sarasota to the south. You’d never go to B-town for art museums or four-star dinners, but its beaches were uniformly superb.
The humble l’il town wasn’t exactly a secret. PA, Ohio and Michigan had been coming down for decades. But Bradenton was small enough to be manageable. No more.
