On Jan. 23, Gary Sheffield will have his life and baseball career defined, likely for good. That’s the day this year’s Baseball Hall of Fame class will be revealed. It’s also Sheffield’s 10th and final time on the ballot. At the moment, he’s 0-for-9.
Sheffield needs 75 percent of the votes to be enshrined. Last year he got 55 percent. He’s a long shot.
Sheffield might represent the epitome of HOF conundrums. His candidacy embodies all the vagaries of the process and how so very, I dunno, human it can be. I was a voter for more than two decades. I’m familiar with how it works.
I never enjoyed it.
