The world’s richest football player works in Cincinnati. I don’t know what that means, beyond the obvious. The Bengals are Santa Claus, the NFL has a heavenly mandate to print money? Joe Burrow can fill food banks from here to Venezuela?
The Men and The Man got the deal done last night. Why it took forever is no longer of importance. And if you believe the QB, it was a very large non-issue to begin with. So, non-issue resolved.
Any tiny chance that Burrow would go into Cleveland with his mind on his money and his money on his mind is officially eliminated.
Truth is, the Bengals, Mike Brown in particular, have almost never not re-signed a so-called “skill position’’ player who was a star and in his prime. At least I can’t think of one. Corey Dillon, maybe, who left to win a ring with Brady. But Dillon had as much intention of returning as Carson Palmer did.
Regardless, the Bengals might skimp on, oh, o-linemen (ain’t that right, Max Montoya? How ‘bout it, Kevin Zeitler?) but the Chad Ocho-Johnsons of the world end up getting theirs.
The next big question is when does the money train roll into Tee Higgins’ station? All aboard. . . Ja’Marr Chase?
Here’s a different take: If Burrow keeps replicating Burrow, it might occur to The Fam that Burrow makes greatness, not vice versa. That is, the QB is integral to the WR’s success. I mean, look at the guys Burrow tossed TDs to in the last two seasons, beyond Higgins, Chase and Boyd.
Trenton Irwin, anyone? Trayveon Williams?
Burrow helped make millions for erstwhile Men TE CJ Uzomah. Hayden Hurst came and went, but not before Burrow helped him double his money as a free agent acquisition of the Carolina Panthers.
Sam Howell

Higgins and Chase are singular talents, sure. But would they be if Sam Howell were throwing them the ball?
Burrow is a budding Brady, at least in that fashion. Brady went to Bowls with Randy Moss and Danny Woodhead. It didn’t seem to matter.
There’s a wonderful piece in the Washington Post, detailing Burrow’s unique, almost extra-sensory ability to see the field and react by feel to what he sees. The smallest tells by a defense produce some of Saint Joe’s biggest plays. We’re not talking big, as in highlight-reel stuff, though there are plenty of those.
We mean plays that for most QBs could have resulted in sack-fumble disaster or Pick-6 trauma. Burrow turns them into 5-yard move-the-chains gains. Watching on TV does that stuff no justice. Essentially, if you can’t see it, you can’t do it. Burrow sees everything.
The Post story makes Burrow sound very much like Peyton Manning. Manning was a foremost student of the game. He knew what the defense was going to do before the defense knew it. Burrow just might be Peyton 2.0.
OK, so now Burrow is Brady and Manning?
Here’s the link to the Post piece. I hope it works.
The Most Important Player in Franchise History got the biggest deal in NFL history. Justice delayed is no longer justice denied. Good.
Are we ready for some football?
Now, then. . .

Imbiber Dave Tailgates at UK
Engaged in some pretty serious imbibing last weekend, at UK’s first football game of the season in Lexington. Now we didn’t just have tickets to the game, we had a parking pass to tailgate with a group of friends. With a noon start time, we were ready to rock bright and early in the morning.
I would say that we are just getting back into tailgating, this time as slightly more responsible adults who have children. Many of the setups around us are aspirational to say the least. But, we still punch above our weight where it counts, so while I fired up the grill our friends started handing out mimosas.
It was essentially breakfast time, so I modified my favorite slider recipe to incorporate goetta and eggs in lieu of burgers. It’s always fun to introduce newcomers to goetta, who routinely go from “what’s the big deal” to “oh man this is a big deal” in about one slider flat. After consuming roughly eight Hawaiian roll goetta egg and cheese sliders topped with everything bagel seasoning, it was time to saunter into the stadium.
We sat down in our seats and drank what may have been the coldest Michelob Ultra even canned. Before you look down your nose at me, this was the first alcoholic beverage I have ever legally consumed inside Kroger Stadium, so this simple macro-brew was out kicking the coverage. Yes we finally have alcohol inside several SEC stadiums, and I won’t complain about the markup until at least next season.
It’s that time of year, and Joe Burrow just made the Forbes list, so here’s hoping for lots more weekend outdoor imbibing.
Cheers!

TUNE O’ THE DAY. . . Congrats to the quarterback.
I was very interested in that Washington Post article because it articulated what I had been saying for years about Payton Manning – what made him as good as he was not just physical but that he had an innate ability to see the entire field as a unit rather than as a collection of individuals. I was never an athlete but played table games all my life – chess, bridge, backgammon, poker – at a relatively high level and the same ability applies to those games – the best players always have it. In chess and backgammon they call it “sight of the board” and in card games they call it “table feel” and in football I would call it “sight of the field”. And I don’t think it exactly correlates with measured IQ level. There were players who I considered had a higher IQ than I did who I could beat regularly and visa versa, there were players who I knew I was smarter than who could regularly beat me. It was interesting that the article said that Joe Burrow could beat everyone else on the team at chess which confirms the concept.
Read that piece in the Post yesterday and it was indeed great - a terrific insight into a football mind melded with smarts Burrow was just born with. If he can stay healthy, the next 7 years should be fun!
And, on a small side note, I remember the Harvest Home Fair very well from my days living on the westside. Glad to see it’s still going strong!
