We get a bit unabashed on Opening Day. Even in the lean years, when all but the most optimistic of us understand that Reds baseball is more a comfort than a joy. Baseball is still who we are, a rose affixed permanently to our civic lapel. Winning is a bonus.
Until. . .
Now?
I dunno ‘bout you. And I know that in the slow-lane journey of a baseball season, Opening Day is like pulling out of the driveway in the Family Truckster, hoping a tire doesn’t blow. But maybe, just maybe, what the Reds flashed in ‘23 becomes something lasting in ‘24.
Dreaming big is an OD rite (and right) around here. It’s made sweeter by the fact we aren’t jaded by an assumption of winning. The Dodgers spent a billion dollars on players in the offseason and $20,000 on a red carpet on Opening Day. Was the joy of their fans any more real than ours was?
