Our knee-jerk reactions to a compelling weekend of dubious achievements begin with Noelvi Marte. The knee-spasm judgement goes like this: Marte, the Reds Opening Day 3B and hopeful lineup fixture, to whom much has been given, was foolish and selfish. He let down his team, himself and all who believed in him.
The MLB drug-testing program is clear and not hard to abide by. Every player is tested once during spring training, then once again during the regular season. Marte tested positive for a steroid. He’ll be suspended without pay until the last week of June.
How could he do this to himself and his mates?
Fair question. Sort of.
