THE INSPIRED CALAMITY of college football rolls onto our televisions this weekend. It’s the best weekend of pigskin. Better than NFL championship weekend. Better than any weekend college basketball produces, and the first weekend of The Madness is something to behold.
The NFL grips us, but it’s never as wall-to-wall compelling as this quasi-am football weekend. Two games, not five. Rabid fan bases, by most standards, but not by SEC standards. The energy in the buildings this weekend could power a small city. Loyalty to schools trumps loyalty to cities.
The Beach Boys never wrote a tune called Be True To Your Metropolitan Statistical Area.
